  1. Watch out for the end of Stage 1 ...where you cross the weir . Too much to the right and it a bit of a drop into the reeds... too much to the left and its a tumble into the bushes. No where to dab down a foot if you loose your balance or go off your line. Sharp almost 90 deg left at the end of the weir wall.
  2. Un-official Enduro route practice taking place tomorrow afternoon from the Pyga shop in Howick (Yard 41). Meet at 130pm to depart at 2pm. Please ensure you have an annual Howick/Karkloof membership or a day licence. Day licences will be available at Pyga (R30pppd).

  9. It was truly a privilege to be part of this ride. I say ride because if you race you miss out on what is more than just a route from point A to point B. A bucket list event for sure!
  10. Must be one of the most spectacular places to ride
  11. Light drizzle here in Howick too. I was out marking the Enduro trails yesterday and it was quite dusty..so a little rain isnt a bad thing (although fine line between just enough and too much!) Heading out to the staging area around 11ish.
  12. Ahh ha...didnt know that Thanks for the info
  13. Being old by several people that they cant vote ?? Apparently they get a "You not allowed to vote" message, even though they registered and verified account

  15. One of the added advantages of Karkloof is that the Midlands Meander is right here too. Howick is the start point of the Meander and there are several routes to follow...so plenty for the non-rider to do (maybe set a limit n the credit card though! ) The Midland Meander is a network of craft shops and restaurants/coffee shops. Accomodation wise...there is everything from Camping to BnB to 5 star hotels... PM me if you need some pointers ( I live in Howick, ride Karkloof/Howick and know which places stock the cheapest ...ummm...post ride beverages)
  16. Event Name: Burg2Berg When: 3 October 2014 - 6 October 2014 Where: Rosetta, Kwazulu-Natal Category: MTB Burg2berg October 2014 is now ready to roll and we would love you to join us for a few days of cycling in our magnificent Drakensburg. We depart on Friday 3rd October from Rosetta Hotel, and return home on Monday 6th October. This is a family ride! There will be no timing chips & no cut off times. It is “fun” ride with the aim of doing back-to-back cycling and enjoying the route and the views, at a cost that will not break the bank! ROUTE - DAY 1 Nice early start! We will meet at 7:30 am in the parking of the Rosetta Hotel. Any late comers will have to clean the rest of the riders’ bikes!! Just after leaving the Rosetta Hotel, we will follow the tar road, over a small bridge and a right turn at the Connington sign will take us to Hlatikulu on dirt roads. This is about 30kms on gravel farm roads, it is only suitable for MTBs. We then turn right to Giant’s Castle when we hit the tar. The next 5kms is a climb and we will go through a location. We have been reassured by the locals that there is no problem riding through. I would feel happier if we ride though in 2 groups with a vehicle in front and another 1 behind each group. We can re-group at the tar to cycle through the location. It’s about 35kms to White Mountain from there. A long steady climb, with a fast ending, will take you straight to White Mountain Lodge - YOU ARE HOME! Today will take between 3 and 6 hours. Please pace yourself as the hills 2day are steep. There will be back vehicles following us the entire way, so please feel free to jump in at any stage. DAY 2 8am start!! Off to Mountain Splendour. We have a choice of routes today. The development team from Mountain Splendour will take the racing snakes and more daring and technical riders over the mountain and through the bush. This is 33km of the most amazing scenery you will ever encounter in the berg. The terrain is rough, but ride able on the cattle paths. Today has more down hills than ups!! When you get to “Jail-break Alley” you are almost home. This is the longest climb you will encounter today, with razor wire on the one side of you and an electric fence (which is live – trust me!) on the other. Over a small floating bridge, then home free and lunch awaits. The other cyclists will hit the dirt for 18,3kms of mountain biking pleasure! Please watch out for potholes. Then we are back on tar and ahead of us is a mini Chapman’s peak. (Not for the climb, but for the amazing views). Please watch out for the potholes on the left. Its downhill from there with some long straights. Time to pick up the pace! At 25,5km we turn left at the Loskop junction. Here there is a wide verge for us ride inside. A long road takes us to the Thokozisa Centre (44,4kms). A left turn there will take to Mountain Splendour at 57kms! Home-Sweet-Home for 2 nights. Today should take between 2 and 5 hours. (You can take an hour off yesterdays’ time). We will ride through another location today and the locals are very quiet. DAY 3 Another early start! The team from Mountain Splendour will brief us on the choice of rides we will have for day 3. Day 4 The last day of riding in the beautiful Drakensburg with the Mountain Splendour team! Let’s make the most of it. For those feeling a little tender, relax and enjoy the day. On day 1 and day 2 there will back-up vehicles following the cyclists. Please feel free to jump into any of the vehicles at any stage when you feel you have had enough for that day. Please don’t push yourself too hard on day 1. You have another 3 days to enjoy your bike! Please note that you are responsible for getting yourself to Rosetta and your vehicle to Mountain Splendour. We may be able to organise a driver (at a minimal cost) to drive your vehicle to White Mountain and then onto Mountain Splendour the next day. Please let me know ASAP if you would like me to organise a driver for you. ACCOMODATION- White Mountain Lodge has self-catering chalets. There are 2, 4 and 6 sleeper options. Mountain Splendour has luxury tents. These tents will be put up for us & we sleep on the most comfortable hotel beds, with amazing white linen! These sights have electricity so please bring extension cords and lights if you want. (And heaters if you a camper like me!). FOOD: All meals (and pudding!) will be catered for, as well as a bottomless pot of tea and coffee. Please can you bring your own drinks (soft and hard) as well as whatever you eat and drink while riding. And a beer mug for soup (and OBs!). Please indicate on the entry form if you would like the vegetarian option. COSTS: Below are costs of accommodation and food for 3 nights. (1 night at White Mountain Lodge & 2 nights at Mountain Splendour) 1 adult : R2800 2 adults sharing : R4300 3 adults sharing : R6300 4 adults sharing : R8000 1 adult + 1 child : R3700 1 adult + 2 children : R5100 2 adults + 1 child : R5500 2 adults + 2 children : R6200 2 adults + 3 children : R7600 (2 tents) Mountain Splendour has private ablutions that you are welcome to hire. These are limited so please book them early with me! A private shower is R120/night. Please can you fill in the entry and indemnity forms (if you would like to join us), so that we have all your contact details and let me have it back by the 15 June 2014 at the latest, with your entry fee so that we can book you a place. Places are on a first come first serve basis, so please get you entries and payments in early to avoid disappointment. We will be having prize-giving and a lucky draw every night. (Any donations for the prize-giving and lucky draws will be gladly welcomed). On day 2 there is compulsory shebeen stop – for those that go over the mountain. It’s not a grab & go!! Photos have be produced (& validated) of the coke actually being drunk at the shebeen. Failure to produce photographic evidence will lead to that group being fined! There will also be King and Queen of the Mountain prizes. Please contact me if you need any further information, or if you have any suggestions, or any concerns. Let’s all have a good time with lots of laughs and good riding. That’s just how we roll! Cornelia (082 9644 620) (Follow us on twitter @burg2berg and on facebook- Burg2berg Go to Event Page
  17. Difficult one to answer as its all relative... I reckon that any reasonably fit rider will complete the 40k and have a blast. Yeah there are some tech sections but there are also chicken runs...so if you dont feel you up to it, just go around. I an guessing you not looking for podium so get out there, enjoy the awesome route and just have fun! My 11yo daughter rides the regular 30km route with me and she copes easily..the nature of the 40k wont be much different from a skills/tech point of view. https://www.facebook.com/Karkloofmtb/photos/a.217026018431009.57865.214144008719210/461329437333998/?type=1&theater

  19. The Sappi Howick Classic takes place on 1 June 2014 in Howick, KZN. Its one of the longest running events in existence (28 years this year)! To give riders as much bang for their buck as possible and to bump up the fun factor we are considering holding an Enduro event on 31 May 2014, the day prior to the 40/20/10km cross country events. Would riders be interested in this ? Make a weekend of it...come to Howick on the Saturday, spend the afternoon riding Enduro (or go Midlands Meandering!), stay over and then ride the cross country event the next day
