  1. Hi. I have a 30 on there. My normal route at Tygerberg has a 26% gradient and I based the chainring size on that........for now. The more I ride, and stronger i get, the more I will consider going 32 or 34. But for now, with my 11-36 cluster and the type of rider and riding that I do, it is perfect!
  2. This is my lady. She is a bit more working class than the other examples, but she still gets my rocks off. Also tried to get her as Ninja black as possible.
  3. You don't need a chainguide when using the wolftooth chainrings. A clutch type derailleur is recommended but with my past race and from other reviews it just serves as extra insurance if you have correctly done the chain tension.
  4. Hi singlespeedGuy I went for the 30 on the front as I was more concerned about my climbing than flat end speed. I check some gear calculations and noticed that the 30 with my 11-36 would essentially give me the same gearing as 2 down from granny on my 24-34-42 and only one gear up from middle chain ring and the 11 and 4 geasr from the bottom on the big blade. I noticed during my commutes that the more days I commute consecutively the less sense it make to grind out a gear and the more sense it makes to rather spin. I have only commuted once with the new setup, but was still able to cruise at 35 – 38km/h on the 30/11 lowest gear. Regarding the multi day or really long stages, I have no finance or opportunities to do them at the moment. My needs currently are at best the local races or doing the trails at Tygerberg. This was my 3rd Burger 60km and was by far my best result yet with very so-so fitness. I did ride with a buddy though and feel that if I didn’t have to wait for him it may have been my best time yet at this event. I totally agree with you regarding each to their own. At this moment and the type of ride that I am doing, and planning to do, this setup is absolutely awesome for me.
  5. I weight in at about 98kg at the moment. Also need to mention that the race was done on a HT, which I think makes it even more impressive that the chains stayed on without the clutch derailer. The reason I went for the 1x10 is that My big blade on my SLX crank had recently lost a tooth at one of the chain pickup spots I like the whole ghetto XX1 feel to the system And I wanted to be different than the "normal" 3x10 and 2x10 masses
  6. I did the Burger 60km this weekend on my newly converted 1x10 (Wolftooth 30 blade and 11-36 cluster on 29er). I am still running my XT Shadow RD without clutch and I had absolutely no problems. Chain didn't even hint at coming off and managed to not run out of gears going up or down. Made very sure to only have the 4 links overlap though. I am so impressed with my purchase.
  7. Hi all. Will my Shimano XT 10 speed rear derailer work with a set of road shifters from shimano? I have a cx project in mind and just wanted to confirm this. Many thanks
  8. Eye of the beholder Wez-O? I really like the look of discs on a road bike.
  9. That I am super competitive. If I see another cyclist\commuter on my route I will chase you down for no apparent reason, especially those twats who decide to not stop at red lights!!
  10. Hi Guys. What is the policy regarding the showing of your exercise files and also the logging of normal rides under commuting? I understand that there is nobody out there to actually police this, but surely some sort of ground rules should be set to ensure a level playing field?
  11. I Can't believe that I'm actually leading something at the moment!! (commuting challenge) Now just need to keep it that way. As the best TV character ever would say: Challenge accepted
  12. Why as in why put disc brake on a road bike or why do I want to have the hubs' opinions?
  13. Sorry about that No Calves. Posted wrong pic initially.
  14. Hi Hubbers. I was just wondering if anybody else is wondering when then disc brake equipped road bikes will be hitting the bike shop floors. I recently sold my road bike and told myself that I would only by a new bike if it came equipped with disc brakes. I understand that it is not going to be from the 1st of January but would like to get the general consensus from the Hubbers. Attached is a pic of one of the only “mainstream” road bikes that I know of that has been launched. Not sure of availability in SA.
  15. I know this maybe a silly question, but what is the vibe like? I dont want to rock up there and feel like the new kid at school?
  16. Thanks Hairy. That may be the best advice yet. What do you do about the powernaps that you take? Do you take a tent with? Want to find out as much as possible about the logistics involved as I have already not entered Attakwas because of this race/event.
  17. I think this will be the future of my XTC frame when i go to a DS 29er. Thanks for the inspiration. Just one question, why the track bar?
  18. I want to but not sure if I’ll be able to get a social team going and solo sounds a bit rof. Biggest obstacle currently is the lack of "seconding team" (wife), especially if I am going to do the solo.
  19. PS. That 9 speed chain link lasted for a couple of kilometers including a Attakwas.
  20. I used it on my previous chain. When I replaced that chain I used the supplied Shimano pin and, touch wood, have not had to mend any broken chains along the trails as yet. ( @theuniverse: Please note that this post is not intended to tempt fate)
  21. I have previously used the older golden 9 speed SRAM Powerlink on my 10 speed MTB system with no problems at all.
  22. @Dangle. Are you not also sponsored by USN? I recall a MTB events cover with you all dressed up in USN kit? How un-biased are you regarding this company? I went to university with one of the models currently being used on some USN products and I personally know that the guy was totally jacked on roids. That alone put me off the whole USN product range. [EDIT is for font size}
  23. Sweert. Thank you hdp_gmx!!
  24. Sorry to Hijack. What length of chainring bolt would one use to secure these single chain rings especially if you are comming from a triple chainring?
  25. Hi Hubbers. Where can one get a hold of these chain rings and how much, on average, do they go for? Thanks.
