  1. Hey guys, I looking for the best puncture proof tyres for my road bike. the two that I'm considering are the Conti Gatorskins or Specialized All condition Armadillos. Both are almost the same weight on the 700x25. They for the Saturday rides to the Cradle from Fourways where there seems to be a fair bit of glass and debris on the road. Which one would provide me with the best handling vs puncture resistance....I'm a new roadie... Thanks
  2. Bosal towbar and Thule Express The clip-on's damage the car and is a headache to install/remove when needed.
  3. Hi guys, Any idea whether the track might be open to us cyclists anytime soon? With the recent road carnage, I really hope this would be a possibility.
  4. RIP Andrew...condolences to the family
  5. Hi guys, So I went for the 51cm BMC. Did a bike fit and it feels good. As mentioned, I have never ridden road bikes before, so I will only really know once I complete one or two longer rides whether the setup is 100% correct. It turns out that the BMC geometry on the SLR is bigger than other bike manufactures....its top tube is 53cm on the 51cm spec. I was very impressed with the service i received from Ian at DesignInMotion cycles (Morningside). He was able to only source the BMC SLR02 105 in a 54cm. Although it would have been a "fit" since I was overlapping, he really took time to check out the geometry to ensure it would suite me best. In his professional capacity, he actually advised me not to take the 54cm even though it cost him the sale. He was giving me the bike around R26k which is a steal for a full carbon and bike of the year 2015. It was also runner up 2016. So if someone is a 54cm...contact him quickly!
  6. thanks for the responses guys.... @cfcjim- looks like Bianchi and I are made for each other Pity Its just way out of my budget though. I perfectly fit a 53cm on the chart, hence it may seem that the 54cm on the Cannondale/BMC would work better.
  7. Hello guys, I have been riding MTB for about 2 years now and want to get a Road bike. My MTB is a Scott Scale 940 sized at "Medium". I enjoy the fit and feel very comfortable on the bike. My stats: - height = 171cm - inseam = 78cm - weight = 83 kg - waist = 36 When I started checking out sizing for the new Road Bike, I realized I have a little dilemma Most of the charts I have looked at places my height towards a 54cm but my inseam puts me back at a 51cm bike size. I want to use the bike for the training and the occasional road race- 947, Argus Therefore, I will probably lean towards comfort over hardcore performance and remain an intermediate cyclist. The two bikes I was considering are the BMC SLR vs Cannondale CAAD 12 What are your thoughts- Would a 51 or 54 suite me better?
  8. So I used a site that calculates the distance covered per pedal revolution ( Bike 1 = old config; Bike 2 = new config) http://www.berkshiresports.org/index.php?ID=bikegearcalculator If I understand it correctly, the 36/26 paired with the 11/40 11s is a better than the 34/24 since there is no duplicate gears. However, you do require additional strength to keep up the cadence- distance covered being the benefit though (4 inches per revolution from baseline). What I found that was that when I upgraded to the 36/26, my cadence dropped as I pushed bigger gears, leading me to be quite exhausted halfway through the ride and switching between gears quite a lot. Guess I will keep the config for a month and see if it gets better. Btw I normally ride Jhb West and East....
  9. Hello guys, I have been riding a 24/34T chainring and 11/40 11s sprocket for the past 2 years and really enjoyed it. Just completed my first 947 on it as well. The training I did for the 947 was a lot of spinning and at least twice a week a 35km on the bike. Im no pro, so I was satisfied with the 4:30 time I did on my MTB (next yer def doing it on a road bike though). Last week I upgraded my front chainring to a 26/36T and did a ride similar to what I used to do BEFORE the 947 training and felt it really really difficult. I felt I was changing gears all the time and couldn't get the rhythm. So I'm thinking its one of three things 1. The gearing doesn't match my riding style 2. The 36T makes me use different muscles and I need to start developing them. 3. It was just a bad day What are your guys though.....I felt worst after the weekend 45 MTB ride than the 947!
  10. Hey guys, I have developed a phobia for riding through sand on those awesome single track bends. I dont really have an issue with straight line patches and ride through them with ease. Its on those bends that I feel the front is constantly sliding out. I have a decent Fork (Fox FIT 4) and have a Continental X-King(non protection) in the front. Bike is a hardtail and I run my tyre pressure at 1.9 bar. I did Modderfontein over the weekend and struggled with all the loose sand. What would be a good front tyre for sandy conditions? I was looking at the Brazo or Specialized Butcher. Other suggestions welcome:) NB- only started riding last year and this was the only tyre I rode thus far.
  11. The Momsen has a better fork as well and comes with the Reba vs the 30 Gold on the Merida. This is probably the deciding factor....
  12. @ Koei- Thanks for the response and info regarding 10s vs 11s chain widths. I bought a SRAM 11s quicklink (LBS didnt have KMC) after the ride on Saturday and will put that one on. Glad I dont need to replace the chain:)
  13. Hi guys, Went out for a ride yesterday and snapped my chain The bike is new and has done only 300km thus far. It was probably my fault since i tried to change up on the RD on a really steep climb. The chain snapped whilst I changed and stood up on the bike to get some extra power. Was also on the outer gear of the FD. I was on a club ride so got some assistance from them and fixed the chain with a link pretty quickly. I have two questions. 1. Do i need to replace the chain now or will it still last...its a KMC 11sL 2. I see the link we put on is a 10s and I have an 11s....is there really a difference between the two? Rgds

    chain slip

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies. I played with the tension screw, but it was still slipping. eventually took it past epic cycles in centurion and one of the guys tuned the gearing for me- said the chain was probably trying to jump on the "right side" of the last cassette, hence i didnt hear the typically sound of it trying to switch gears . Its all sorted out now.

    chain slip

Hi guys, I got a new hardtail with full a full XT groupset (2x11). I have done about 100km on it and the chain has started to slip when Im on the smallest rear gear. All the other gears are fine and I am able to switch between gears with no issues. Checked the rear derailer and it is in line with every selected gear and does not try switching up or down a gear by itself. There is no wear on any of the components and Im using a dry lube. Any ideas what the issue might be?
