  1. Cyclists set for 9-day ride to raise money for cancer, multiple sclerosis Published Oct 14, 2022 Written by Shakirah Thebus Multimedia Journalist, Cape Argus Cape Town - Approximately 30 cyclists, most of whom know what it’s like to lose someone to cancer or multiple sclerosis, will cycle from Mossel Bay to Cape Town to raise funds for the treatment and care of these illnesses. Rylands resident and dental surgeon Dr Elias Parker said Wheel to Heal was launched to raise funds for charities and had set a target of R2 million. Parker lost his wife, Mariam, to cancer five years ago. Parker said it was “an unbelievably painful” experience. Those who had lost someone in this way “know the sense of detachment, it simply makes you grapple with it for not days or months, but for years”, he said. At the age of 63, Parker got on to a bike for the first time. The group will leave Cape Town for Mossel Bay on December 3 and will cycle from Mossel Bay on December 4, through Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Barrydale, Montague, Worcester, Wellington and then back to Cape Town, a nine-day journey. “In addition to raising the money, we also want to increase awareness. In the rural areas, a lot of people, quite a large percentage of them, die because of very late detection or no detection for that matter. “So increasing the awareness and the significance of early detection is as important as providing funds for the treatment of cancer.”
  2. Apologies for the lack of updates... When I wrote Preparing for the Silk Road Mountain Race 2019 - The Bike - Part 1 I was gearing up for the adventure of my life. Little did I know what was around the corner, something bigger and far more profound than I could ever imagine. I was diagnosed with skin cancer. A mole on my stomach had turned and unleashed hell within my body. And worse, it was spreading quickly. After surgically removing my primary melanoma tumor, both my lymph nodes, and a newly developed tumor on my chest, I had moved to stage 4. And, I still am. Fortunately for me, I have access to highly complex treatments to help beat this thing. After exactly 80 days there are signs of improvement, but I'm by no means out the woods. My life has changed for good. All plans to race 1000miler in SA and The Silk Road Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan were off. Convinced I'd be back, I reached out to the organisers; I asked them to consider deferring my entry to next year, to give me another shot at it. Without hesitation they confirmed my place for 2020, and sent me off with something to fight for. Thank you Andy Masters (1000miler) and Nelson Trees (Silk Road Mountain Race) for being so understanding, you guys rock. Replanning has already started and I'm fit enough to ride again, just. I've even entered The Transatlantic Way, in June 2020. Then of course, god willing I'll be at the 1000miler and The Silk Road Mountain Race ready to celebrate a recovery victory. If you're keen to follow my progress you can follow me here, or check me out on social media (Twitter, Instagram, Strava). Back soon with a new update.
  3. Gooday All With today being World Cancer Awareness Day (4th Feb), I would like to know from all of you, who put many hours on the bike, how you feel knowing about the link between testicular cancer and cycling? I am obviously speaking to men between the ages of 15 and 40, as this is the main target group. I would like to use this opportunity to chat about it, and hopefully educate a person or two, and hear what others think? The floor is open...
