  1. Gooday All With today being World Cancer Awareness Day (4th Feb), I would like to know from all of you, who put many hours on the bike, how you feel knowing about the link between testicular cancer and cycling? I am obviously speaking to men between the ages of 15 and 40, as this is the main target group. I would like to use this opportunity to chat about it, and hopefully educate a person or two, and hear what others think? The floor is open...
  2. Can anyone recommend a good Endocrinologist close to East Rand and or surrounds
  3. Hi Hubbers Last weekend at Around the Pot something strange happened for the first time. Due to some mechanicals in the first 20km we chased back to the main waterpoint at 100km to try and make up some time. The last 20km I did a lot of the work in front with a head wind, and didn't drink and eat enough as I usually do (my mistake). As soon as we stopped at the 100km waterpoint and I climbed off my bike, I felt something strange happening inside my chest. Personal info: - 32 years old, fit - Training consistently 10 hours p/week (2 x HIIT sessions p/week for the last 2 years) with recovery in between (training balance) - Avg 6 rides p/week - Max HR 197 - Resting HR 49 - 165cm, 64kg - Don't take any medication (haven't been sick in probably +9 months) - Logged 7274 km to date (2018) Back at the waterpoint I started feeling light headed. As soon as I looked at my HR monitor, my HR was around 192 - 201. It didn't want to come down. Chest felt weird as like the Heart was in a panic mode. 10min later we went over the river and on the other side as we went out with a easy group, the HR went up to 209. Told my partner something is definitely wrong and we stopped, standing still for around 5min next to our bikes. In that 5min the HR didn't come down lower than 182. We pulled the plug right there. Went back to the waterpoint to our support and in total it took about 20min for the HR to calm down and return to normal. Last week Friday I saw a Cardiologist, Dr Corbett in Panorama. They did a ECG and sonar of the HR. The conclusion: Heart is perfect with no damage to muscles/chambers. The effort might have just been to much with dehydration etc playing a role. Did some easy HIIT classes again last week which were normal, and HR recovering normal in between sets. This morning went for a ride outside (in the wind) and one section pushed HR between 170 -181 for around 15min consistently. As soon as I stopped in Stellenbosch it happened again, HR up for about 10min before calming down. Has this happened with anybody else? Any idea what would cause this?

  5. Hello all! My story began like this.... As I battle with my obese body I recently discovered bicycle touring as the ultimate solution for it as I continue! While commuting on Bicycle, the urge to ride longer and further became my desire as I enjoy it. I asked myself, How come I never realized it all these years. On thinking and pondering on it, I went googling 'long distance bicycle commuting' (bicycle touring), wow! did I not discover so much! I have cycled since my young age though with many brakes in-between. One may wonder how come I discovered the advantages of bike touring only recently? Well, as it were, on that faithful day, I had cycled over 64 kms aimlessly actually; but with intension of pushing my obese body to 'force it' to lose that excess weight that has failed or has been difficult to shed off before. I never planed to ride far, but the urge to keep going fuelled the trip. After the ride that day, the feeling was so ausome! That I impromptly exclaimed and said... "Oh bicycle touring is fun" I truly felt I have found the true solution for my weight loss. The feeling made me think deep and I googled more on 'long distance commuting'. I read write-ups and I also read of other peoples adventures. I also realized the link in the 'Oh' in my impromptu exclamation. From there I adopted the phrase, O' bicycle Touring is fun were 'O' now stands for Obesity! That same day, I decided to adopt the phrase as motivation both for myself and for others for weight loss, and to promote Bicycle Touring amongst fellow obese people as my touring expands. I have now been doing this touring around my neighbouhood on the East Rand of Gauteng as I increase my distances on some days. I have been reading articles on Bicycle touring especially writings on Africa Bicycle Tours and they have been very inspiring and a strong fuel for me. Now that I have also decided to share my new found gold pot and experiences with other obese people, I decided to put up this post as a platform for the purpose. I invite genuine interests from all fellow obese cyclists and everyone with interest on obesity problem solving centered around Cycling and bicycle touring. Well, as I am very committed, only God knows the longest distance I will ride some day, for right now am currently building myself a better, stronger and proper Touring Bicycle as I cycle on! Fellows, come on let's help one another! Let's talk, ride and loose it! Yes we can only if we try! O'bicycle Touring is fun! ...keep pedaling! Dominic-Mary

  7. Gooday all I wonder if any one can give me some advice as to correct nutrition and training for some one starting out. Basically what I want to do is increase my endurance on a mountain bike whilst on the trails etc. I want to be able to increase my ability to cover longer distances. On top of that, I know that correct nutrition intake is as good as the training itself. My basic understanding is that you should have your 2L bladder filled with cold water and have a bottle or two on the bike filled with game/powerade. effectively, enough for hydration and enough for electrolytes. Depending on the distance, I am sure throwing in a power bar every now and then is also necessary. Give me some ideas that you use regarding the above or correct me where I am wrong.
  8. Hi guys, So first off and to set the stage, I'm a newcomer to the sport of cycling and, I'm really enjoying it. After hitting some trails around cape town and learning the bunny hop etc, I'm hooked! ROFL! So back to the topic. Spoiler alert: This is guna get real, but I'm concerned about injuring my private parts. After doing some googling, sure there are many indications, linking reproductive injury to cycling and that literally scares the crud out of me. The fact that this sport is so popular, growing and there are many long term cyclists, make me think there are practacle and effective ways at enjoying the sport whilst protecting the body. If I could bother you all for some advice in this regards, it would be much appreciated. Since I have so little experience, and contact with people in the know, I need to turn to a community as accessible as this one. Many thanks!!
