  1. Hey Hubbers! Recently, we've become increasingly concerned about the spike in muggings and violence, particularly along the N1 section that many of us use to get to town, Camps, Hout Bay, and southern suburbs. After some thought, I would like to try a proactive step towards enhancing our safety and security on the roads. I'm in the process of creating a WhatsApp group specifically for cyclists in and around Blouberg. The goal is to provide a platform for us to connect, coordinate, and ensure a safer journey for everyone. **Why a WhatsApp Group?** While I understand that WhatsApp groups can sometimes be overwhelming, I believe there is tremendous value in creating a space where we can look out for one another. This group will serve as a quick and efficient way for us to share our plans, coordinate rides, and, most importantly, increase our visibility on the road. **How Will It Work?** The idea is simple. Cyclists can post a message indicating the time they plan to head into town, their approximate location, and an estimate of the average speed they intend to ride. By doing this, we can form impromptu groups and ride together through the potentially risky areas. Once we pass the hotspot, we can choose to continue riding together or part ways. **Sticking Together for Safety** I understand that the presence of a group may not deter all potential threats, but there's strength in numbers. By sticking together, we can create a sense of unity and deterrence, making our rides not only enjoyable but safer. **How to Join:** If you're interested in being part of this safety-conscious cycling community, please drop a comment below or send me a direct message with your contact number, and I'll add you to the group. Let's come together, look out for one another, and ensure that we can continue enjoying the freedom of cycling without compromising our safety.
  2. http://www.climbing.co.za/2015/09/cyclist-mugged-below-rhodes-memorial/ "A cyclist (who also happens to be a climber) was mugged and relieved of his bicycle below Rhodes Memorial. Below is an account from the cyclist: Around 15:30 on Sunday the 13th of September I rode across the M3 bridge at Mostert’s Mill, and went through the rotating gate intending to cycle up to Rhodes Memorial. There was a group of hikers about 100m ahead of me walking up. Two men ran through the group (hence I did not see them coming). One man headed straight to me. He had a gun, which he made visible to me as he ran towards me. He ordered me to get off off the bike and his partner took it. He then ordered me to take off my watch and helmet which he took. He asked for my phone which was not on me. He told me I has lying, and I told him to search me, which he did not do. He then ran down towards the gate and I think they split up. I walked down after him, he was adjusting the seat, and then shouted at me to run up the mountain in the opposite direction, which I did not do. He then rode across the bridge and away. Fortunately I was not hurt in any way. I did not retaliate at any point, but I was tempted to shout to the hiking group (that were ahead of me) but not while he was holding a gun. I reported the muggins to the police immediately at the Mowbray police station and have registered a case. See below a photo from the internet of the bike and colour scheme which was stolen." http://www.climbing.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/GT-A-1_table_mountain_bike_mugging.jpg

  4. I was cycling on the R312 (towards Paarl) around 9:35 this morning (22 March 2015). Just ahead of the Fisantekraal train bridge a man crossed the road and was now walking in the same direction I was cycling, as I passed him he pushed a stick into my back wheel. Fortunately I managed to stay upright and rode away to safety across the bridge, after being chased for a few meters he ran off into the bushes when he saw cars approaching. Thank you to the bunch of riders that stopped and cycled with me to a safer spot on Klipheuwel Road where I could wait for someone to fetch me.

  6. Anyone have more information on this, time, place, pictures of bikes, riders, etc? Edit: changed the heading to mugging after receiving more information
  7. Another guy kicked off his bike passing Kyamandi before 7 this morning. He managed to get away after a horrible fall. Watch out. Seems the MO is one guy walks on the left hand side and two on the right hand side of the road. As he approached the 2 guys pretended to cross the road and kicked him off his bike. Rather choose a different route.
