  1. Hey Hubbers! Recently, we've become increasingly concerned about the spike in muggings and violence, particularly along the N1 section that many of us use to get to town, Camps, Hout Bay, and southern suburbs. After some thought, I would like to try a proactive step towards enhancing our safety and security on the roads. I'm in the process of creating a WhatsApp group specifically for cyclists in and around Blouberg. The goal is to provide a platform for us to connect, coordinate, and ensure a safer journey for everyone. **Why a WhatsApp Group?** While I understand that WhatsApp groups can sometimes be overwhelming, I believe there is tremendous value in creating a space where we can look out for one another. This group will serve as a quick and efficient way for us to share our plans, coordinate rides, and, most importantly, increase our visibility on the road. **How Will It Work?** The idea is simple. Cyclists can post a message indicating the time they plan to head into town, their approximate location, and an estimate of the average speed they intend to ride. By doing this, we can form impromptu groups and ride together through the potentially risky areas. Once we pass the hotspot, we can choose to continue riding together or part ways. **Sticking Together for Safety** I understand that the presence of a group may not deter all potential threats, but there's strength in numbers. By sticking together, we can create a sense of unity and deterrence, making our rides not only enjoyable but safer. **How to Join:** If you're interested in being part of this safety-conscious cycling community, please drop a comment below or send me a direct message with your contact number, and I'll add you to the group. Let's come together, look out for one another, and ensure that we can continue enjoying the freedom of cycling without compromising our safety.
  2. Close to R55 towards Summit Road, Blue Hills, Midrand Guy on a DualSus Alu Cube 29er got hijacked this morning at 8 am by two black male thugs, one with a gun and the other with a knife. They were hiding in the bush/field on the right before you get to the top where the road makes a 90 degree turn to the left. Strava segment = BikeJacking HOTSPOT https://strava.app.link/ch0qFBHABN
  3. This morning just before 6am I went for a ride on my trailbike. Plenty of traffic out and on a 'safe' route. Planning to ride from Somerset West on the R44 past Lord Charles, and then do a 20km return trip before work, just a quick spin. Around 300 or 400m up the road two guys are walking towards me - they've been walking down the road since I've started the climb, I took note, but nothing suspicious about them on first glance. Around 20m from them they go wide and one walks towards the yellow line, one towards the shoulder, meaning that I have to pass between them, since there's plenty of cars on the road, so I can't cut into the road. Small warning lights go on, but I dismiss it as being paranoid. As I ride between them, they both grab me. I almost break away and they become jittery and frantically grabbing at me and my bike. Smallish 20+ year old guy with dreadlocks and a bigger guy, short hair or shaven head probably around 1.8m wearing a dark hoodie (brown or green) with a massive logo on the front. I'm currently riding flats on my trailbike, and so when I pop off at least I'm not connected to the bike. They both grab at the bike and I get a hold of the rear wheel so we enter a tug of war. I realize after a second or two that there's no way these guys are just going to let go and so I do a quick check of their hands, and that's when I spot the saw in the one guy's hand. One of those pointy saws (lekker rusted) with the crooked handle used to do branch trimming. At that stage I decide that it is not worth it, so I let go of the bike and start running away from them. The guy with the saw actually starts chasing me with the saw down the road. I run in front of an oncoming car (the last one of the batch that crossed the green), so I'm pretty desperate. The gentleman stops and forms a barrier between myself and saw guy. But saw guy does not run away, he stands there looking at me. I ask the guy if I can get in his car and then saw guy starts walking away. At this stage I see the other guy is still up the road and now mounted my bike heading towards us (down the hill). I go on instinct and rugby tackle him. Note: I'm not a rugby player and tbh a guy on a bike carrying momentum gives you one helluva shot, but luckily take him down and quite hard on the road, and as he jumps up and tries to run, I get an ankle tap in for good measure. When he goes down again, I am considering a punch when I notice saw guy running towards us. I grab the bike, bars all skew from the fall and run up the road a couple of meters. The guy that I tackled luckily seemed rattled enough to stop the pursuit for the time being. He now joins saw guy a couple of meters down the road, and they just stand there nonchalantly waiting for the car to go before they come after me again. At this stage a bakkie comes up (AH building Supplies), the first vehicle over the new green light, and so I also stop him. After he stops they turn around and walk down the road (in no rush whatsoever). The bakkie gent (Gerrit) is nice enough to pop my bike in the canopy and give me a lift home. Flippen hell, what a morning! So blessed that only my knees are scraped from the tackle.
  4. Hi all, Please support this petition to the SAPS to help end bike-jacking in Johannesburg specifically, but in RSA in general: http://bit.ly/2iOJfZ6 The reports of new incidents and bike-jackings at knife and gunpoint are a daily occurrence now. One of the main 'hotspots' is along Rustenburg Rd in Melville. Numerous cases have been reported to the SAPS, but nothing has been done about this. Let rally together and use all any any means to get the support of the SAPS and security companies. Please sign and share the Change.org petition: http://bit.ly/2iOJfZ6
  5. ZAR500 fine for bike theft syndicate. No wonder we have a crime problem in SA. Alleged bicycle syndicate thieves go free after paying R500 fine NORTHCLIFF – Two suspects, who were allegedly part of a bicycle theft syndicate, received a R500 fine at Newlands Magistrates’ Court. about 1 hour agohttp://northcliffmelvilletimes.co.za/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2016/04/NT16PHATHUbicycle_33147.jpgBeagle Watch task force officer Clement Ndlovu chased down the suspect. Photo supplied.Three suspects who were allegedly behind the bicycle theft syndicate were arrested on 20 April. The first suspect was arrested after Beagle Watch Security officer, Clement Ndlovu, gave chase along Beyers Naudé Drive in Northcliff. 6. Hi, we're busy coming up with ideas to fight bike jacking, and to improve safety in general in what SHOULD be safe biking zones (for both road and trail cycling). Your feedback would be greatly appreciated if you could take this quick poll, it will only take a few minutes of your time. Thank you in advance! You can find the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S2RJC3J
  7. A few months back there was a newspaper article in the Cape Times about a bikejacking in Somerset West, that was caught on the cyclist GoPro. I even checked out the video of the robbery as uploaded on YouTube. Well today I attended Somerset West Regional court and witnessed two of the perpetrators sentencing. Magistrate Cannon had the following to say to the accused: "Your cowardice act have effects on many who enjoy the sports of cycling, who now has it in their minds that they are easy targets when enjoying their sport. You have thereby infringed on the constitutional right to freedom of movement of many...you need to be removed from society...Society expect it. The court cannot ignore the reasonable expectation of society." They were both sentenced effectively to 11 years direct imprisonment for the robbery. The gunslinger was given a further sentence of 3 years direct imprisonment for possession of a firearm without being licenced. Just thought this forum could get some good news.
  8. With the growing epidemic of bike-jackings and assaults on cyclist the consensus seems to be to ride in groups to deter these happenings. Other than the hub and friends how does one know of rides in your particular area? I have been looking into some social event sharing apps like Meetup or Joinin where one can list their cycle routine/event and others can find it by location, but these don't seem to work terribly well, or they need to be paid for. Are there other alternatives out there? Some sort of community forum/location based app/site that will work? Where one can list their preferred cycling days, times, distance and area and it will hook them up with other cyclists with similar criteria in the area. As stated I have tested the Joinin website and app and it works, but requires some tweaking as it isn't really designed for this application, and the map/address section is not very accurate, but at this stage it is the best that I can find.
  9. News Flash on cycle safety: Clients were attacked on Helshoogte this evening. New road and on the descent. 4 muggers, 1 with a heavy stick and 3 to do the mugging once rider down. Fortunately no casualties and the 2 riders got away with all possessions. Apparently the idea was to hit rider off the bike and then have the 3 other muggers do the picking. This latest incident now makes ALL roads out of and into Stellenbosch extremely high risk. Post of W.Keith From twitter: @MattDaneel: Myself & @hendrikvh got attcked on Helshoogte pass outside Stellenbosch. +-6:20pm, 4 guys with sticks hit us but got away! @bicyclesafetysa
  10. Anyone have more information on this, time, place, pictures of bikes, riders, etc? Edit: changed the heading to mugging after receiving more information
  11. Details still sketchy. @Muddy_Mike: @TeamMutualSafes Rider got mtb bike jacked in Blue Valley this evening. Hit with a brick. Two guys gun & knife. @bicyclesafetysa @Mr_TREAD
