  1. Hey Hubbers! Recently, we've become increasingly concerned about the spike in muggings and violence, particularly along the N1 section that many of us use to get to town, Camps, Hout Bay, and southern suburbs. After some thought, I would like to try a proactive step towards enhancing our safety and security on the roads. I'm in the process of creating a WhatsApp group specifically for cyclists in and around Blouberg. The goal is to provide a platform for us to connect, coordinate, and ensure a safer journey for everyone. **Why a WhatsApp Group?** While I understand that WhatsApp groups can sometimes be overwhelming, I believe there is tremendous value in creating a space where we can look out for one another. This group will serve as a quick and efficient way for us to share our plans, coordinate rides, and, most importantly, increase our visibility on the road. **How Will It Work?** The idea is simple. Cyclists can post a message indicating the time they plan to head into town, their approximate location, and an estimate of the average speed they intend to ride. By doing this, we can form impromptu groups and ride together through the potentially risky areas. Once we pass the hotspot, we can choose to continue riding together or part ways. **Sticking Together for Safety** I understand that the presence of a group may not deter all potential threats, but there's strength in numbers. By sticking together, we can create a sense of unity and deterrence, making our rides not only enjoyable but safer. **How to Join:** If you're interested in being part of this safety-conscious cycling community, please drop a comment below or send me a direct message with your contact number, and I'll add you to the group. Let's come together, look out for one another, and ensure that we can continue enjoying the freedom of cycling without compromising our safety.

  3. Good morning all, Did anyone here cycle between PE and Grahamstown? Any safe back roads? If anyone can assist with a GPX file. Thanks
  4. Hi, If this is not appropriate here, do tell me and I will delete the post. I am mostly a commuter (I do about 6000 kms a year), I was a bit worried about cycling at night. Which is when I realized that utilizing the backpack, which is the most visible part of a commuter cyclist, to improve safety is such a natural idea! Over 6 moths, I started building this backpack and several prototypes later, I think we got it right! Presenting to you - Aster, the safest commute backpack in the world! Do check it out at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/1656733 . I took inspiration from cars and motorcycles and built in a turn indicator, automatic brake lights, rear lights visible from 250M/800ft, static profile lights and door-me-not front lights. The indicators are controlled by a handlebar unit via Bluetooth and the backpack can be configured through an app. Of course, as a cyclist, it gave me an opportunity to rethink the backpack from a cyclist point of view too! For example, an "Emergency contact info" slot is just basic and should have been there in every cycling backpack! Also, I decided to put in reflectors that were visible from multiple angles! I finally launched the backpack on Indiegogo. I would love to hear feedback from the community. This is still a work in progress, of course, so would love to hear any ideas on how else we can improve safety through this! Thanks Gandharv
  5. Hey guys, I know there aren't too many places left to do this, but where can one ride alone SAFE in and around Cape Town area?
  6. I will soon need to commute, I want to know if commuting through the R59 is safe. The area of the R59 i'm planning to commute is not close to Joburg therefore traffic is not that harsh. If the police see me on a road bike on the freeway will they stop me? Will i just be told to get off the highway or any severe punishments? The reason i have the need to commute through the R59 is that it is the fastest and most direct route to my destination. From a documentary i heard Chris Froome traveled through some highways in his teen days. Thanks in advance for help and your answers are appreciated Miguel
