  1. Hey Hubbers! Recently, we've become increasingly concerned about the spike in muggings and violence, particularly along the N1 section that many of us use to get to town, Camps, Hout Bay, and southern suburbs. After some thought, I would like to try a proactive step towards enhancing our safety and security on the roads. I'm in the process of creating a WhatsApp group specifically for cyclists in and around Blouberg. The goal is to provide a platform for us to connect, coordinate, and ensure a safer journey for everyone. **Why a WhatsApp Group?** While I understand that WhatsApp groups can sometimes be overwhelming, I believe there is tremendous value in creating a space where we can look out for one another. This group will serve as a quick and efficient way for us to share our plans, coordinate rides, and, most importantly, increase our visibility on the road. **How Will It Work?** The idea is simple. Cyclists can post a message indicating the time they plan to head into town, their approximate location, and an estimate of the average speed they intend to ride. By doing this, we can form impromptu groups and ride together through the potentially risky areas. Once we pass the hotspot, we can choose to continue riding together or part ways. **Sticking Together for Safety** I understand that the presence of a group may not deter all potential threats, but there's strength in numbers. By sticking together, we can create a sense of unity and deterrence, making our rides not only enjoyable but safer. **How to Join:** If you're interested in being part of this safety-conscious cycling community, please drop a comment below or send me a direct message with your contact number, and I'll add you to the group. Let's come together, look out for one another, and ensure that we can continue enjoying the freedom of cycling without compromising our safety.
  2. Just be alert when training outback Contermanskloof and Malanshooge Roads. 3 black guys in a white Nissan 1400 bakkie tried to bike jack a rider at 7:30am this morning. They pretend to be broken down at the side of the road with the bonnet open. They were following rider until the entrance to Conties where they waited. He knew something was up so when this guy jumped out of the bakkie with a knife, rider sprinted pass him. Flagged cars down and 2 cars stopped only then did the thugs flee.
  3. Hi, we're busy coming up with ideas to fight bike jacking, and to improve safety in general in what SHOULD be safe biking zones (for both road and trail cycling). Your feedback would be greatly appreciated if you could take this quick poll, it will only take a few minutes of your time. Thank you in advance! 4. Just a heads-up to all cyclists who ride the Braamfontein Spruit during the week... I was held up at gunpoint close to the Ballyclare bridge on Thursday just after 18h30. Dodgy guy jumped into the path in front of me and pointed a gun at me. After trying to reason with him, he cocked the gun in my face - sense prevailed and I reluctantly handed over the bike... As soon as he had jumped on the bike and started riding back down the Spruit towards Rivonia, I started running after him trying to keep him in my sights. I eventually caught up with him near the scout hall (he wasn't a very good MTB'er) and managed to get some help from some homeless guys on the Spruit, and together we managed to scare him so he crashed and ran away. I was extremely lucky to get my bike back, unharmed. I am working with the police at Morningside Station to make sure we bring this guy to justice... Moral of the story: 1. Don't ride alone, even if you have a new bike that you REALLY want to ride before the weekend! 2. Try to assess the situation, and don't try to take these guys on on your own when they have the advantage 3. Try to keep the thief in your sights once he's ridden off (and is effectively disarmed) - you never know how the situation may turn in your favour. Be safe Matt
