Garmin not acquiring satellite

As of thursday afternoon, my garmin forerunner 305 no longer acquires satellite signal. I turn it on and it just shows "Locating satellites". If I press the down arrow on that screen I dont see any satellites in the sky and if i press down again all the bars that normally show signal strength are zero.

 

Anyone else had this? Any ideas?

 

I've rebooted the device and reloaded all firmware

Have you also updated/loaded the chipset (Forerunner 205/305 GPS Chipset Ver. 2.90 as of Nov 17, 2006) ?

Updating the firmware is always a good idea (down load and run it from your PC is more reliable than using the webupdater), but first try a reset:

How long since you last used it?

If not used for a long time (perhaps also after a reset), it could be that the GPS has to reacquire the almanac info from the satellites. This can take as long as 30 minutes.

Yup... Like I said. All firmware and software on the device is up to date. I use it almost daily and on thursday when i turned it on it just didnt acquire any satelite signal. I've left it on for over an hour and not one satelite is acquired.

Just to make sure we cover all the bases. Did you update both the Chipset (latest version - 2.90) and the unit software (latest version - 2.70)? Also make sure that these updates have installed correctly. It sometimes happens, and has happened to me, that these updates does not install correctly. Check on you unit what the current intalled versions is. Maybe one of the versions installed as version 0.0, wherby this needs to be re-intalled. Yoy can also try and gice your unit a complete hard reset. You will lose all your custom settings and ride information, so back up your data to training centre. If that fails there is one other button combo I know of to try.  It does the same thing as the hard reset  but it skips the prompt asking if you really want to clear the data.  It can be hard to do, so you may want to try a few times if nothing happens.  Press and hold mode and enter.  Press power but do not hold it.  Continue holding mode and enter for several seconds.  If it works, the unit should power on and go through the initial settings wizard after you release the buttons.  You can also have a look over here for more help: http://forums.motionbased.com/smf/index.php abd more specific fore the Forerunner 305 here: http://forums.motionbased.com/smf/index.php?board=60.0 steynja2007-11-11 00:15:15
