You have a valid question of course, some cranks don't have meaningful figures stamped on them and you have to measure them.

 

The correct answer is centre to centre. I.e. centre of the BB axle to centre of the pedal axle.

 

Some here recently called me a pedant and he was right, I suppose. In that vein, please use the term "crank".  A crank is an arm by definition and saying crankarm is like saying crank crank. I suppose only a crank would point that out but without cranks we'd have neither bicycle, nor eloquent cyclists.
