Hi Hubbers.

So, in a few months time, I am leaving our beautiful shores. Taking my magic steed with, but sending it prior to my flight. Question I have is this.... What is the best way to pack my bike to get it to the UK with NO damage? Can anyone recomend a decent bike bag / hardcase?

Anyone with some experience with Airfreight options, or know of a reputable yet cost effective company that I can send my beloved bike with?

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm considering two of these for our Oz trip. I spoke to the owner and he's willing to sell me two at the advertised Argus 10% discount.

Looked at these, very good value for money and they are large. Emirates does not see my bicycle as sporting goods and wants to charge me R600 p/kg  Costs more than our tickets . I am also looking at the Thule bike case, similar, but maybe a bit smaller.

Trying to get Airfreight quotes, but there are HUNDREDS of companies out there  When I get a price on the Thule, I will let you know

Some airlines have no clue...Eimirates aaaiiii

Maybe try fly with Swiss if your coming to Europe they charge 200 Francs (R1600)one way per bike up to 30kg (Thats 30kg for the bike plus the normal 22 kg per person), over 30kg then they hit you the $ excess rate per kg.

I've got one of these B and W bike cases the triangle shaped one

which is very nice but a bit of a packing nightmare if you have a mtb or a large size.

Fancy that Saffa bike safe idea, anybody want to buy my B and W case?

The Thules go for around R5500 new.

I recently had a look at one of these:

Seriously cool piece of kit, but a bit pricey.

How often do you intend to transport your bike? It might be worthwhile to consider stripping most of it down and sending it in one of those cardboard bike boxes if it's a once-off trip (you could then buy a proper case for much less overseas).

Okay, you have a VERY good excuse to sell your bike and buy one when you get to the UK. Bikes are a fair bit cheaper over here.

Buying a case - R3-5k

Sending it - R2k??

That is R5k you could add to your proceeds towards a new bike...

I have no idea what bike you have, but generally I reckon bikes are about 30% cheaper over here.
