Hi all,

I've been reading arouns for info on running non-UST tyres on UST rims. The benefits being weight saving, the cons being much reduced side wall protection.

Some guys running non-UST tyres on UST rims have noted the occasional popping out the beading during riding, ending in spectacular bush invasions.

What are the risks of running non-UST on UST rims? besides the higher potential for punctures and side wall tears.

I'm looking for a really quick rolling hardpack XC tyre now we're heading into the dry season in JHB. I'm running UST tyres now and find them heavy and with higher rolling resistance than my foldables.

Ideas anyone?

Hey, can't comment on the non-UST on UST rims as I'm not running tubeless (yet! :) ). I have the Kenda Karma foldables (front and back) and I'm very impressed with them on dry hardpack. Quick rolling but with enough grip. I normally ride at Groenkloof and they haven't dissapointed me yet. Not great when it's wet though.

I ride tubless rims with non UST tires and have done so with many different brands of RIMS and TIRES some examples

DT Swiss XR4.2d with non UST Rocket rons= No problems

DT swiss 420sl with Spez the captin non UST= No problems

Bontrager Rythem Elite with Bontrager XDX non UST= No problems

ZTR Crest with Conti race king non ust and Bontrager XDX non UST= No problems

I have also run Monorail UST on the Rythem elite and DT swiss Xr4.2d and also No problems

Only thing I will say is that mounting a non UST to a rim is much easier, so If I do get a sidewall issue I can install the tire boot and remount the tire with ease and not sit and wrestle the tire while on the trail. I also carry tubless plugs just in case but I am yet to have to use either.

Im currently running Conti Race Kings 2.2 foldable(non-ust) & crossmark foldable 2.2(non-ust) on the front and no probs so far. Only problems I had with the initial tubeless conversion was for them to hold air, both tyres went flat, but since I redid it - Not lost any air.

Nice, in which case what is considered to be the best sealant to run with Maxxis or Kenda tyres? Looking at the small block eight or the crossmark on the rear and don't yet know about the front.

Depends on the tire, for example the Rocket rons have very thin and pourose side walls so I need to use OKO to start then swithed to Slime pro, this sealed the holes and then the slime pro was the top up.

With Kenda you must be very careful of Stans or Joes the amonia causes delamination.

I have been using slime pro for a while now and have had no issues, it is cheap and it works well.

I mounted the mountaing king with stans, was flat the next day due to seepage out the side walls. Did not repeat it a second time as you did, but what sealant you use?

I'm using Stans, with Stan's yellow rim tape. They are running on Mavic 317 disc rims, the second time I did it I pumped them up super hard. I also put a little extra sealant in, seems to have stopped any seepage. Im using a Race King not a Mountain King, I have heard that the Non-UST Mountain Kings are harder to inflate & to keep inflated.

Hope this helps

Been running Stan's sealant in a(non-UST)Kenda Nevegal DTC 2.35 tyre on the front for 6 months with no delamination or other problems whatsoever. Kenda do say that use of ANY sealant (not just Stan's) invalidates the warranty though. Consensus off The Hub is that, if you're a regular rider, the tyre's more likely to wear out before any possible delamination happens.

Ja, I looked at the Mountain king and the rate of seepage and decided it is a lost cause. Was a mission to seat it too, had to bomb it eventually.. Running it tubed for now, but have some OKO around, will try that too although I was not that impressed first time round.

Good advice, Reckon i'll go a get me some new quick tyres tomorrow and get the LBS to mount them and seal them with slime pro.

As long as you use tubes with those NON-UST tyres on your UST rims you should not have a problem. Most Pro's or at leat on the Euporean circuit race like that much lighter than the tubless tyres. Strange that a Tyre+Tube combo is lighter than a Tubless tyre + Stans combo. UST is overated.

I thought the point if sealant is to remove the need for the inner tube. Tubeless rims are designed to form an airtight seal around the bead so i didn't think the tub was necessary. I run my tyres at pretty high pressure so i'm not too worried about beading rolling out or loosing the seal.
