Hi *

I have been slowly building up some kit for my MTB for on road use. (yes, nothing beats a road bike for road but at my size, those puny little things crumple at the sight of me, nevermind me sitting on the damn thing)

One of the things I have noticed is that the front chain ring at 24/32/42 is a lot smaller than road bike sets and the loss of speed is noticable on the long flat sections

I ride a Giant XTC1 2011 and was thiking of upsizing the chainring to a 50 something / high 30's / mid twenties combo on the front for road rides. I havent been able to find anything online. so...

1) Do such things actually exist for MTB sets like SLX?

2) Would something from a Shimano 105 or similar road set fit?

3) Should I rather just get a road crank for the front and fit that when riding on road? If a get a compact set triple ring crank, would the slx front derailer work for the road set?

Thanks in advance

Shimano makes a 26/36/48 combo for SLX cranks. You can get them from CRC.

Road chainrings wont fit on an MTB crankset. A road crankset may or may not fit on an MTB, depending on the width of the BB as well as the clearance of your chainstay.

hi there

you can get a Shimano Deore front crank set which has 48 / 36 / 26 chain rings on it . your std front derailer should work with this no problem . you ll just have to move the derailer up a little to accomadate the larger chain rings

CRC have bigger size rings for the SLX but in 9spd, mine is 10spd. is there a differance? I expect the 10spd chain wont work on the 9spd's

As to riding off road. I'll have to pedal harder I suppose

and dont forget that with the bigger chainrings u will need a longer chain. For Argus this year used a 46,36,22 combo. worked ok but not ideal. would be interested in seeing some of these shimano combos...time to check CRC again.
