Anyone else do this route? Am seriously considering commuting to work every day - if/when weather allows.

I can take the bike lanes up to Paarden Island - but is it possible to cut through the harbour? ie how strict are they with regard to permits etc?

I work in Sea Point so if I cut through there its just harbour - waterfront - greenpoint... bypassing the N1 altogether. Oh yes will be doing this on a hardtail mtb. Any inputs/suggestions appreciated.

I commute everyday I dont cut through the harbour i use the N1 all the way into the CBD but thats at 5:30 am. The cycle lane goes through pardeen Island and if you cycling at a decent time then you have plain riding all the way in. Cycled in with Hairy this morning :D

I cycle from Table View through to the waterfront regularly. Once I get to the flee market area, where the cycle lane ends, I head straight through to the harbour entrance. Just nod and smile as you cycle through on the left slipway to the left of the booms

Coming back from the waterfront, wheel yourself through the left side of one of the booms (be careful of the spikes!!!) and off you go.

Okay that's good to know. How is it safety wise? In two minds about taking the trail bike... think I'll rather take my el cheapo hardtail. Need to upgrade the brakes & forks tho. In any case much appreciated! Might see you guys out there!

The only section that worries me a little is the train station bridge within the harbour. Lots of eyes looking you up and down there.

right, did the ride this morning. only 18.96 km according to endomondo. easy pace, just under an hour.

those railroad tracks are vicious! i wiped out on the first one! bike just disappeared beneath me - it was wet and the tracks were at an angle - fortunately i wasn't going too fast... scar on my left knee just healed... now there's no skin again.... hahaha.. broke/scratched my evil eyes as well... never leave your shades in your pants... i fell on em. (took them off because well, it was foggy/misty).

other than that what a pleasure! i could see myself commuting everyday!

Agree'd, I cycle to Camps Bay from Durbanville atleast twice a month through the harbour, broke a spoke after jumping the railway line there...and there is so many! Can imagine at winter how you will fall going over there as you hit them at a angle

Sorry, should have warned you about the tracks. I've also wiped out on the wet tracks before....you'll only do it once and then it's tippy toe over them if they're wet ;)

It was a really nice morning to be on this route.

I have chatted to many people who have started commuting since the route has opened and I have also noted that there is an increase in solo lady cyclists due a gain in confidence that they are safer on the route compared to before ... all good news!
