Palaeodom Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Just got myself a fancy new carbon handlebar for the mountain bike. The last carbon handlebars i had were hectically scratched by the shifter and brake clamps. Is there anything recommended to protect your handlebars from this?
andretraut Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Cockpit components are supposed to be attached directly to the bar, and any material to protect the bar will compromise performance. My advice will be to make 100% sure about measuring and then clamp. Whatever marks are left is consealed, until you remove the bar....and then it is no longer your problem!

For weight saving and reduction in trail buzz. I was thinking some thin tape just to blunt the edges of the clamps. if it would compromise the performance then obviously I won't bother.
kosmonooit Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 You should get some special carbon paste to use when mounting brake brackets etc on carbon bars - it also adds a layer of protection I guess
The Drongo Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 wrap two turns of electrical insulation tape around the bar at the point you want to clamp your controls.
