Giant Trance X3 - Opinions

I have been looking hard for a replacement to my old merida hard tail.

I disregarded FS at first because they cost more than I was willing to invest at this stage.

then I found a specialised stumpjumper fsr for 11k that fell through <_<

Now I am thinking that I might get a FS for a reasonable price.

I am looking at the large trance x3 currently in the classifieds here

Does anyone have experience on these bikes. The problem with this specific one is I would need to upgrade the front to have a FD ie. shifters, chain rings/crankset, FD what would these upgrades cost me realistically?

I'm forever trying to convince people to buy Trance Xes, I suppose it's my good deed to mankind!

See this thread also: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/102594-entry-level-fs-merida-vs-giant-vs-gt/

About the ad you're looking at:

The Fox shock and fork are great, already an upgrade from the X3 spec, just make sure they are in 100% shape (expensive to replace)

Juicy 3s are OK

Don't know the RD

Replacing crank, chainrings, shifter and FD will cost a good R2000 to R2500 new, but I would ride the bike as is and buy the bits from classifieds until I have it all. There are great bargains to be had.

Gobi is great

Mavic rims are OK

Nevegals are great

Price also seems decent, but haggle anyway

DJR, since you ride a trance X, maybe you could help me. I just went to look at the 2011 Trance X3 @ Cajees. They took a in-leg measurement and according to that it's a 18.5" (a medium according to them). My current bike is a large, and my height is 1.86, I am just worried i need a large in stead of a medium. should i rather settle for a smaller frame than a larger one?

I found this and they all recommend a larger frame size.

I am confused?

Short answer: Get a Large

Long answer: I'm 1,84m tall and the large fits me perfectly, right down to the long 120mm stem the bike came with. It is 100% balanced climbing and decending very steep and rough stuff. I think the Medium will be a bit cramped for your height and it will limit your ability to move forward and back on the bike when you ride technical trails, which is exactly what this bike excells at. However, riding the 2 sizes and comparing is probably the best way to make sure.

I have a trance x2 its the best bike ive ever owned. Climbs well, descends like a beast handles anything i can throw at it. Not sure of the specs on the x3 but you can always upgrade

Weird that our heights are not to far off, but 2 size differances between us.

I was borderline a medium or a small. Went with the small and very happy i did as i have great control over her when it gets gnarly

Yeah, I was borderline too, but felt to big on the medium. My mate who is smaller and he rode a medium but should have had the large.
