Haha. I remember when I was waaaay younger. I thought I was a bit of a badass. We went up to Durban for SA Champs. Paddled out at Cave rock in a pair of Dayglo Boardies and Dayglo rash vest with an attitude to match. Needless to say Cave rock Spanked me, snapped my leash and undressed me. All in one swift movement. I spent 20 minutes fishing around on the inside for my boardshorts.

Hahahahahahahahaha! I got taught my biggest lesson at Kalk Bay. The surf was smallish - four foot - but on a shallow reef like that the water moves like a steam train. Snapped my board and got dragged along the reef after my first bail, and went to drown my sorrows in the Brass Bell rather.

That's not Mavericks. It's in Portugal. Dunno the name of the spot but it's where Carlos Burle rode that giant wave a few weeks ago.

Nazare?

Mavericks is quite far off-shore. Outside Half-Moon Bay if my memory of riding Giants is right.

You're quite right, the pic jogged memory, and I misplaced the pic

I used to ride waveski a lot, one weekend we were up the Wild Coast, and the surf was working good. I paddled out on my own, and to my horror, the surf was about 2x what I thought, went over the falls on the first wave that I paddled over at the backline, and somehow popped out right side up after being the washing machine for what felt like hours, I stayed on the wave to the shore, and went to the pub instead.
