Sorry, you'll have to back up a step....

Could you explain in roadie terms... Do I take the little pad thingy out and check????

Some of them you can check without removing it. But to remove is easier then taking a pee after 2 beers. Just do not get oil on the pads (even from your hands) otherwise you will have to toss them anyway.

you will eventually hear metal on metal and you will take a bit longer to stop

Or you will hear a scream and feel grinding pain, when you fail to stop.

Back up a bit. Read Mamparas first post again.

Then visit the offending brake manufacturers website, or if they are Avids, your local COMPETENT LBS.

metal on metal, or when the disc becomes translucent from wear.

Translucent discs are not a good indicator.

Some ultra-lights, such as those used by top rider Kevin Evans, are translucent to start with.

Yeah, but for those, the time to change is when your shoulder is smashed to pieces at the bottom of some random hill.
