Hi

I am starting xc and um currently 16 years old and take a medium frame. I have done some research and narrowed my options down to 2 bikes which fit my budget of R10000

A new merida matts lite 1000-d

or a 2004/2005 litespeed tenasi

Specs of the tenasi:

Weight: less than 10kg

Fork: Fox 32 rcl

Deraileur: sram xo

Seatpost: thompson carbon

Bar: thompson carbon

Crank: Truvativ

Brakes: shimano

Specs of merida + picture @ http://merida-bikes.com/en_int/bike/38/MTB+Hardtail/MATTS+Lite+1000-D

Do you think the litespeed titanium frame will still be okay and that I won't have any prblems with it.

P.S. the merida weighs 11.7kg

Take the Ti, you will not regret it.

1)It will outlast the other frame.

2)It rides better. (You don't need full suspension on ti)

3)As the parts wear off you can replace/upgrade.

the litespeed is the business!

Litespeed WAS the business.

Geometry has changed drastically in the last 6 years. Look at the frame and then look at a new frame

Have you got a very limited budget and therefore also riding an ancient bike?

Both you guys have given really k@k advice.

And now for the constructive advice: buy the newest, best frame you can afford, and then upgrade the components as you go along.

And don't make the mistake of buying a frame that's too big for you.

King Crispy, you've got way to many bikes and I feel that you must give the spark to me as a present, because you seem like a nice guy! :D

R10,000 should give you quite a few choices at the bike shops/online. I would look at buying new rather than old second hand models.

Look, coming from a Merida fan, I would buy the Titus, but rather for R7500. The Merida is going to be new and nice for a year, then it is going to drop value. Whilst the Titus has already deappreciated, and rather increasing value as time goes on(because of riduculous single speed buildups etc). With that in mind, also look at 29er hardtails...

Be very careful, not all mediums are the same size. They vary from a 55cm top tube to 59cm depending on the Brand.

Have a look in the classifieds as there have been some good deals around R10k mark.

Try a few bikes and see what is comfortable for you before buying it.

PM Chaunce as he has a few good deals going to.

The Scott Scale 70 gets a Best Buy rating in What Mountain Bike Feb edition

It probably fits slap bang in your budget and you can upgrade as you go along

My son had the Scale 40 which is the same frame just with upgraded components and it is a wonderful bike

Light and tight
