What I don't understand is why shimano would change the hub if they did not think it is better than the old one? Don't they have engineers that design and test these according to requirements, and based on that they would've seen that this hubs are inferior?

Why go through the hassle of designing new seal and hub mechanisms if it is not better? And why then put it on the two top of the range MTB wheels that shimano has to offer?

marketing is a blixem...the new and improved turned out to be not so new and improved. I have watched my dear friend @swift01 service a set of these hubs almost after every ride cause otherwise they would seize up on the next outing...not shimano's finest product.

Hope(pun intended) you listened to some of the advice and didn't go for the impulse buy.

I've been eyeing them for a long time now, and understand what everybody is mentioning above. My question is why they would make something worse? Not the marketing side of it, what did they have to gain by changing the design if it is not as good as the previous one? Makes one wonder....

Regarding the hope wheels, to get something that weigh close to the same as the shimano in Hope/ZTR costs quite a bit more. Post some examples please, I've been going over sets on CRC and everytime end up with something very expensive, or something heavier than my old XT's.

you have PM

wrt to weights my hope/ztr combo is about 1520 according to the stan's site and I think the XT wheels are about 1600. if you are looking sub 1400 wheels you are going to hoes and they wont be tough. There is a reason why the hope's with ZTR's keep on winning MBUK reviews time after time, and those boys can be brutally honest about a product's flaws.

I gave my old 20o5 XT hub wheelset to my girlfriend when I "upgraded" to the XT wheelset. The old hubs were ignored for 4 years before a service - they were a bit vrot inside but still turn perfectly after a good service.

Must say I havent had any sense my new wheels are rubbish - nothing but smooth spinning and a nice loud freehub click...Am going to go home and pull them off teh bike to check - paranoia has set in :(

We live in a world where quality and value is meaured on a scale in units of grams.

Consider yourself guilty too.

My experience - have had my XT wheelset for just shy of 2 years now and they are brilliant. If you take their price, weight and "tubelessness" into account they're even better. I took into account all the fuss about the hubs and still bought them all that time ago. Bought from CRC in a basket that qualified for free shipping. Arrived at my door for ~R2700. Couldn't have found anything in that weight range and tubeless ready for that price (selling locally for R4500 at the time).

Compared to my DT Swiss 340 hubs which were an expensive maintenance item. Rear sealed bearings didn't hold up, had bearings go twice in close succession. The XT have long outlasted the DT Swiss wheelset.

Glad to say I am replacing my steed and the replacement comes with XT's.
