The word friend is genderless. I think that is the reason why is specifically refer to girl friends. Therefore excluding the boy friends - or male friends ??

It could, but not necessarily. It is considered a loose term.

mmmm ... some loose advetising then. I was wondering why boyfriends could go (implied from girlfriends) but I can't go with my wife.
