Need some info on this climb please?

We are staying in Underberg for a week at the end of January and I want to take the Mtb with to train there..

Would love to do the Sani Pass but I see you might need a Passport to do the whole pass?

How far would I be able to go without a passport? My passport expired and don't want to go and get it renewed if it is not necessary??

How is the riding in that area? I would be riding on my own so mostly main roads?

u need a passport. its basically flat till the sa border, u need a passport to pass that, then you get to the actual pass and head on up which is the real climb then at the top you have the lesotho border.

i didnt climb it but i bombed down it in winter  good fun, but ice/snow/mud is slippery i learnt and showed everyone behind me how to come chop

No passport, no climb.

Lots of trail up there on top. Take a GPS if you are not familiar with terrain. Weather changes quickly this time of year, usually storms in the PM

It's awesome. Even the tar roads are great - 1000m climbs everywhere. My g/f's passport expired and we only realised at the border on Sani Pass, but they let her in that time. Don't try this at home :) You can get a temp passport fairly quickly.

Ridden up once ... I am pretty certain you need a passport at the SA Border post and Lesotho Border Post (we did). I guess it is obvious to say that it is a very tough climb so make sure you have your climbing legs. If you are there with your family you may want to klet them take a tour to the top while you ride and then meet at the Highest pub in Africa. If you are feeling strong the next climb (Black Mountain -- starts few kms after Sani) adds to the experience and fatigue.

As far as I have heard there is some good riding in Underberg area with a few MTB friendly farmers and I think there are some official bike trails but not sure who and where they are.

its rough going, and sani is steep. im not sure if anyone profiled our decent ill have a look. we met up with a guy at the top that had spent the better part of the day cycling up.

there is some good trail there, but as suggested try get some routes.

i would suggest a follow car if you have available or at least someone that can get into lesotho so you have backup if needed

Thanks man...any idea of the time it would take to do both?

How steep is Sani? more than 15%?How would it compare to the mamba in sabie?

I just want to make sure I have the right gearing, because i struggled a bit with my 2 by 9 going up Mamba...but only just...one more gear would have been perfect. Or should I fit the granny.

Hi. Sani Spoors is a mountain bike trail park with over 40km of single track. 2.5km on Drak Gardens road. We have showers and there is a restaurant. On the 21st January there is a race along the Umzimkulu River ( http://www.drak.co.za/activities_mtb.html) which will have incredible single track and a few river crossings. PM if you need some training route rides.

Sani Pass in red and compared to a few other climbs which some people may know. Sani is a serious climb !!!!

Ok that looks serious!!Might have to fit the granny!

Fit the granny, unless you are fitter than a granny. Seriously fit the granny as not only is it steep but quite rocky in places. riding from the top is awesome and there is a visitor center/ bar at the top that does lunches, snacks and beer. Enjoy
