I have a SR Suntour XCR suspension fork on my bike.

I find after going down a hill with lots of bumps or potholes the fork seems to lock up and becomes rigid

it then takes a while for the shock to work again

Is this a common fault with this kind of suspension or is there some thing i can do to stop itMTBiker2007-12-20 00:15:34

hmmmmm, at first guess I'd say sounds like the rebound is too slow.... not sure if the fork has a rebound adjuster but if it does, try playing with it a little.

if the fork hasn't been serviced in a long while, maybe a service is what you need.

but! just save some cash and get a marzocchi... you will not regret it.

Agreed. Rebound that is set too slow will give this effect, but realize that that it is due to the shock slowly "collapsing". What happens is that the fork cannot return to the "home" position whch means that the next bump sees the fork having travel, and so the situation progresses untill the new "home" position is in fact at the bottom of the fork's travel. Hence the feeling that it is locked out.

The faster the rebound the faser the shok returns to it's natural "home" position and then has the full travel avaliable for the next bump.

Not quite an Johan Borman explanation, but hopefully it will suffice......Sorry Johansmiley2.gif

Thanks

I looked on my fork and i only have a preload adjust knob and a lock out. The only other thing i can c r 2 metal caps @ the bottom which i think r 4 oil

Mate, your fork is sprung and is pretty much an entry level item. Take it to your LBS and get em to check it over. If you are riding alot it is probably time for an upgrade. Rockshox's Dart 3 is your best bet at about a grand. Alternativley post for a second hand one in your area so that you can have your LBS check it out for wear and tear.

That's a cheap (read crappy) fork.

Makes friends with an lbs and they'll probably have something suitable in their workshop which you'll get for a decent price.

Hey, it was a perfect explanation. Anyone wyho reads those two para's will understand it.

Richard Feinman said that if you can't explain something in plain English, you probably don't understand it yourself.
