If events aren't sanctioned, then no police permission is given by SAPS and it could be shut down by them on the day... nothing more embarrasing then that! Whether it will actually happen.. who knows, but I am not the keen to find out.

re the water temp differences, remember IM and ITU are different and have differnt rules.. completely!

Yes the cost of entry fees are rising and with the new TSA fees increasing, they are set to rise somemore.

TSA day licences have gone from R30.00 in 2011 to R70.00

There is now a R5000.00 hosting fee for a provincial event or R50 000 for an internation event, which TSA charges... just so that you can stage your race.. you get nothing for it.

Your race Levies are now: R15 per athlete for a Sprint race. R25 per Olympic and R50 per athlete for 1/2 Ironman dist or more. Now these are just provincial events, if national or international... it goes up to R100 per athlete. What do event organiser get for this? Nothing.

If you want your race on Tv, you need to pay the R60 000 production fee to the production company, but now you also need to pay R7500.00 to TSA to flight it on TV... for what?? I don't know.

So yes, entry fees are rising and it doesn't mean the organisers are making mroe money, but rather that TSA is!!

Guys, your event is very well priced in my view. I was referring to some other shorter distance events being much more expensive then your's.

And the cheap camping facilities on site of course also makes a world of difference!

If people just follow the rules that apply in the country you race then there's no reason to argue.

As long as these rules are drawn up by humans and as long as they differ day and night between different countries then there will always be good reason to argue? Swiss, why do you think the USA is allowing wetsuits up to 28 degrees?

Why bother turning every IM ESPN broadcast into a motivational "everybody can do this" lets all cry together now 9/11 festival and then kick them in the balls when it comes to race rules after they finally decided they want to do it???

Rules change all the time. Someone decided to make certain events draft legal as well (The bloody Olympics). Now that has gotten a much bigger impact on the sport than any floatation device will ever have. They basically said that strong swimmers/runners will rule the sport and screw you cyclists........

So why then bother about a small thing like wetsuits?

And if we grow the sport, maybe we can have more and more events as we already do each year....

Isn't it great to race 15 tri-events (from BSG, Xterra to Full IM) every year instead of the 1 of a few years back?

JA... The drafting rule was changed last century long before the hub and internet forums... and trust me it created more of a fuss at the time than the wetsuit argument we have been having.

The lesson in that is that change happens for some reason, even if it would not have been approved if it was put to the vote.

I can still see the wetsuit issue going the same way as drafting, in 5 years time everyone will wear wetsuits whenever they like and all the "when we's" will be saying, when i did..... it was a real triathletes race.

As you mentioned its great to see the sport growing with all the races on the calendar, funny thats still with the wetsuit rule being enforced.

Well thats the reason not to change the wetsuit rules. Many people do IRON MAN for the first time because its a challenge to take part / finish, and people expect it to be hard.

Making it easier to actualy do.....might increase profits entries but dilutes the achievement.

The IM event will also end up being draft legal eventually. I see the future of the IM event in teams. Imagine a country has 1 swimmer, 4 cyclists and 2 runners.

Only teams may slipstream each other and each runner runs 21km's for example. That would make for awesome vieweing admittedly and maybe the only way IM can go to the olympics one day.......

In the end it doesnt matter what rules you apply, people will take part in their event of choice.

At present I just feel the wetsuit rule will not have a big impact. Swimming 1.9 or 3.8km with or without a wetsuit will not change if I am an IM or not?

In any case, the reason I took this up is cause I have a 61 year old friend who had a shoulder operation last year and he is really terrified of swimming without a wetsuit in fear that he may drown if a shoulder should pop out. In my view allowing this guy to do that will not change the quality of my race, but obviously most of the other athletes feel it will... so I will just leave it and let the rules be then.

Was interesting in any cazse to see what everyone thinks.

So it seems to be an issue for 1 out of 5 athletes. Or maybe 2 out of 10? Some people will say 6 out of 30 whilst other will refer to 8 from 40.

So in other words 20 athletes for every 100 feels he wont enter a race if wetsuits are not guaranteed.

40 entries lost for every 200 atheltes that enter.

If 500 guys enter then a 100 entries are lost.

Get it?
