Having spent some mula on race wheels and tyres it seems to make sense to stick in some light weight tubes as well.... Any downsides to this? I am thinking if you are going to puncture from something penetrating your tyre, the thickness of the tube is unlikely to make a difference?

thats what I was wondering... Personally i can't see me noticing 50 or 60 grams per tyre (which is the difference I think), BUT that said it has to be one of the cheapest ways to save 100g - to save that on a wheel or cranks and you can easily be talking a grand or 2 or more in many cases...

dont do it i tried that and had a blow out at the start of race( still riding to the start) , they dont seem to handle pressure very well, I asked around and most people seemed to think it wasnt worth the the risk

Its sounds like they are suseptible to heat and the other elements

I should have clocked while installing them I had problems with the valve etc

my sense is its not worth but it is a cheap way to shed grams

hmmm... interesting mixed messages when you search the interweb - seems most say it does not make much difference as the tyres are what determine your likelyhood to puncture etc not the tubes - but there are a few more stories like yours out there... Anyway, I ordered som maxxi extra lights and they arrived yesterday. Must say they are noticibly lighter AND also MUCH smaller (rolled up) than standard tubes which makes carrying spares that much easier as well...

Going to give them a spin at the fast one this Sunday, mated to my new (and also fast but potentially fragile) Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX Tyres and fulcrum racing 1 wheels (both of which I picked up for a steel from cwc last month...) Sounds like a quick combo (as long as I don't spend half the race on the side of the road fixing punctures :whistling: )

I hope it goes well I had a shocker fixing wheels 10 mins before the start I think i used the velo brand so that could be it but i think i used 4 tubes to get 2 to work and 1 that I lent a mate on a ride misfired and his wife had to fetch him .. let us know how it goes

So, guess what - i punctured after 5km's!! First puncture in a race - ever! Coincidence?

After a VERY slow change (really battled with the tyre for some reason)... I was on my way, and, fortunately i managed to survive the rest of the race with no more drama... (after the early puncture I was thinking I would be begging for tubes before long...)

So, ja - I am thinking the odds are the tyre and or tube clearly places me in position of more risk of punctures, but on the other hand maybe it was just Murphey and bad luck.... Right now I am leaning towards giving the tyres a few more chances but ditch the light weight tubes...
