I've never cramped while listening to Pill Liggett. Not even during le Tour. Trouble is, it's only available for 3 weeks during July.

Will put on my loin cloth, grab my executioners club and go and find myself a cow. Skin it , cut out the heart and eat it raw. Then take a bite out of the liver for some extra iron. Take home some chunks of meat and on the way back find an old saltworks and chop out a piece. Make fire with a flint, cover myself with a bear skin and dream of the simple life where nature provides everything I need and a world free of snake oil merchants. Sounds like Planet Zug.

Thats what Bear Grylls does for training.

I've gotten cramps for years, even in my teens. Whether it is from going riding/ surfing or bodyboarding . I always cramp in the same two spots, I use the USN crampblockers and they work for me. I also previously said that I've been giving them to my mother who gets bad cramps all the time from poor circulation, and they work for her. The doctor put it down to bad circulation in my case and not under training because at the time I was still playing club rugby and my fitness levels were very high.

Everybody is different so what might work for someone, might not work for others. Best bet is to try a few of the products on the market and see which works for you.

I went to Dis-Chem yesterday, armed with a list of products: USN Crampblock, Salt Tablets,Hammer Endurolite and Antillac.

Antillac was not available , so I can't comment on it. In the end I bought the Biogen Anti-Cramp pills. The Hammer product is an Electrolyte replacement product and cost R 250 for 120 tabs. The USN cost about R 65 for 30 tabs. Biogen has virtually the identical composition as the USN product but cost the same for 60 tabs. A lot of what was in the Hammer product was also in the Biogen product.

The Salt Tablets are plain old tabs, but I think useful for me who sweats a lot when exercising.

I think that even if I trained exactly right for the intensity I wanted to ride at, there is no guarantee that I won't cramp again. Too many outside factors I can't control. I don't take GU's when I ride and try and stick to natural foods. I just wanted something to carry with me in case of cramp to see whether I could make them ease up a little.

Cool - keep us posted how you go, always useful to compare notes. I've had a few sample packs of Hammer Endurolytes free from previous orders. Perpetuem works ok for me, even though it's pricey. I've tried the sample Endurolytes a few times and I can't honestly say they made any difference good or bad, certainly not on my race prep list. I suspect the energy drink and occasional gel are keeping my levels ok, and so there's nothing for the Endurolytes to do.

I also sweat a lot - I'd say keep Magnesium in mind with your experimentation. If electrolyte depletion is your issue it seems that can be at least as big a factor as sodium if not more so. The Dischem bottles of it are cheap from memory (they have lots of pills and mine has lasted so long I can't remember what it cost), so it's also not a costly one to experiment with.

I have one of those massive Dis-Chem Magnesium tubs. They last and last. The next ride I want to do at pace is the Argus, albeit on a mountain bike. But I will give it horns and see how I feel after. Then the big test will be the Epic.

Nice. Good luck on the Argus and Epic.

Farmers put out salt tablets in the field for their cattle.

Buy one of them, put it next to your bed (or couch) and give it a good lick everytime you go past it.......
