Hi

Going to be in Hermanus in April and wanted to ride with my kids (6 and 9)

Are there any safe trails that we can go cruise in Hermanus?

yep!

there is a new initiative... seems to me just a money making thing... (i apologise for the mis directed comment) or call it maintanance fee. go to local bike shops , Euodia Cycles at the Engen garage (sandbaai) actually started it , pay them a pass fee and you get a number and key and maps to local routes.

or come see me at my non cycling shop

I read somewhere the other day they actually had a nice trail there, trails costs money to build so paying a fee should not be a problem. But ive never ridden it so dont quite know what its like.

Euodia developed those trails with funding from PPA.

You can also try the Urban Assault at the other end of town

Last time I checked, building & maintaining trails did actually cost money. With your attitude, the trails in your area should be shutdown in a few years time, just like it happened at Thandi Trails when the landowner got sick and tired of people riding his trails without paying.

Thanks Douchbag.

Also, I wonder how much effort you've put into developing those trails and the sport in the area compared to the likes of Euodia and guys like Paul du Toit have? Just wondering you know.

before calling me a douche bag just acknowledge i also called it a maintanance fee ,

secondly the way the payment and licence number system was implemented did NOT acknowldege or even notify the rest of the cycling communtiy or Bicycle Shops that have a different customer base to the initiators ie Above mentioned shop. what ATTITUDE ? dont call me names with out a proper back ground or even knowledge of the area

i only object to the uninformative implementation of thus and VERY gratefull for the work Jan and his crew have put in.

AND if i was REALLY as mischevous as you imply i am i would not even have bothered steering our good friend in their direction or even mentioned the new licensing of the right to ride the trails

Yes there is a nice trail out towards hamilton russel, you can get alot of km in there! I did it in dec left the mornings early. Also did not know about the fee until a week later, so paid them after i used the trail in the mornings as they only open at 9 i think. We are also going up there in april. Maybe i will cycle up to herms again

only PARTS of that trail and the urban assault might be appropriate for a 6-9 year old though

ummm - Minty is a Hermanus local.

And PPA have the info up on their site about the trails:

Back to the original topic - you can also do some dirt road riding along the Karwyders road, or head up the Valley towards Caledon - not terribly exciting, but a good enough work out. Perhaps the best thing to do is get a lift up the valley with the kids, and then freewheel all the way down to the Engen...

I recall (and that was a couple of years ago) there was a lovely bike trail that started at Fernkloof nature reserve and went to the end of town in the direction of Stanford and then came back to the traffic circle all along the coast. One could easily do it in bits and pieces with small children, but it is relatively flat anyway.

The Euodia trails are perhaps not suitable for a 6 yr old, too difficult. The first km or so will be fine, but there will be a lot of walking for those little legs. Take them up to Fernkloof, there are a few difficult sections (for a 6 yr old) but the terrain is varied and not too steep and will keep them interested.
