I hope the sea is better this year.  I got nailed by it last year and did not make the swim cut off Ouch<?:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />.

I am sitting out this year trying to sort out runner?s knee that I picked up with last years training for IronmanCry.  I am reduced to just cycling at the moment Cry (waiting to be flamed).  Must say I don?t like swimming and after last year hate it even more.

With that background I must say I was expecting more from the event especially at the price. I still would like to do it once but currently rate the Comrades higher and definitively better value for money.

C'mon - Im has to be better value for money than Comrades - going back for my 3rd IM this year (and will be doing my 8th Comrades as well)

Well thats what they say about Comrades... its harder than IM but caters for those that can't swimor cycle...

Go on OxW make it a NYR to KLAP that swim....Clap

I'm hoping to do a tri this year, just have to choose which one... local std distance type or Swiss IM ???? Confused

The hard part is doing the training for IM Dead

I would love to do Swiss IM. I want to try do an overseas IM to compare what the local one is like. This will be my 4th IM. I was not too happy with the date change but they said it was because of the weather conditions. Last year the water was awful and the worst yet (although I went faster). The problem for us up in Joburg is that it started getting colder and darker for those last three weeks on the bike when it was in March. I am not looking forward to training in March and April. Is it merely a coincidence that Two Oceans is the same weekend that IM would have been, hence the change in date?

I feel like the fitness is right up there. I am swimming well in the dam on a Sat afternoon and did 150km to the reserve, thru and back again on the bike on Sunday and felt good when I got back. Running is my weakest leg (pun intended!) so still have big miles to do with the running. I must say that the body gets used to the training after you have done it a few years, plus I have a 10 week old daughter to contend with.

Decided to have a fun IM this year' date=' didn't want to miss out again but I'll be doing the Epic the week before.[/quote']

Fun at IM after doing the Epic. I think that is a tall order. Your body is going to take huge strain. You are obviously just aiming to make the cut off.

how do you prioritize your training?

I would love to do Swiss IM.

Weeellll as the entries are already sold out for 2008, you would have to wait till 2009, seems like it is a popular race.

Putting everything into Epic, so the bike is sorted. Then running 3* a week, I've found the IM "run" turns out to be a bit more of a walk anyway. And the swimming well thats a problem but I've got a nice wetsuit so I'll take it easy and float around for a while.

Hey Velouria according to Popeye you put the meths on your ass not through the bread like you usually do !

Thanks for the idea Scotty - lol

Sounds like a waste of a good bottle of meths...

Comrades and IM- I've heard that IM is tougher, simply because it takes the top athletes longer to finish. BUt Comrades breaks down the body a lot more- because of the pounding and the repetition! Same joints get smacked over and over again!

Just look at how long it takes you to recover from a good running session!

Pounding the road for 11 hours at Comrades puts big strain on your legs but 17 hours at IM is tough in its own right. I think they are both hard but I do think people go into IM and lot more prepared than people who attempt Comrades. I am talking about the average joe, not the top boys.

I agree- I think people prepare better for the Ironman. I think on avg it takes the the avg joe longer to finish the IM as well.

Like I said I don't really like the running thing!! Done 4 Ironman races planning on at least 1 maybe 2 next year!

Better value for money? Lets see <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Entry fee:

Comrades R170

IM R2200 (including SS card thing)

Equipment:

Comrades R2000

IM R15000+  (That is only if you don?t buy a proper Tri bike)

Travel cost:

About the same.

Doing the event, priceless?LOL

I was not interested in the Pasta evening and award ceremony due to having a wife and small children that needed to be kept happy.

I definitely work on the swim for next year. I will also check the entry fee next year.  If is too high, which seams to be the most likely the case, I rather add some money and do an Int Ironman like the Swiss, <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />FranceoN> or GermanyoN>. One that preferably has the swim section that is NOT in the sea. Big%20smile
