Looking at the X-King tyre for a tubeless setup and have read the Protection can be used tubeless...

  • X-King Protection: 4 plies / total 240 tp - i 630g
  • X-King UST: 3 plies / total 330 tpi - 840g

Is there an advantage to sticking with the UST or run some risks with the Protection ?

Opinions ?

Thanks

I know some guys who raced the Epic this year on non-ust Conti protection tyres, without tyre problems. They rode hard-tails, ran them at 1.4 bar (both are light okes) for more comfort. Not sure of the models they used, I ride non-ust, mountain king in front, race king rear.

I have the X-King II Protection 2.4 on as a front tire, tubeless.

It offers great grip but I like running my front tire at a very low 1.6/ 1.7ish bar.

The protection does not work that well with low pressures. When going into a corner, small creases forms in the side wall and it feels like the tire wants to carry on going straight even though you are pointing it in a different direction.

For that reason, I would rather get the UST next time. The UST handles lower pressure much better and will therefore offer more traction.

I trie the Race sport versions of both and both of those let me down after a couple of months, I now only stick to UST. The extra weight is worth the peace of mind.

I know this i s a late entry to this but I have had about 6 months experience on this: Running X King Protection 2.2 front and rear on Mavic SLR 26". No problems, they are very fast and I have had no flats. Have had to run them on higher air (45Psi) as they do crease doing tight high speed cornering (a little scary), also I am not a super-light oakie. Wet - Not so great, and they collect mud, so you will have to flip the coin btwn Fast when dry vs easy ride when wet.

Enjoying them, and will refit when done!

Again, they work for me doing XC and technical.
