Long story short I am looking for a new shock for my bike but I have no clue where to start. Basically looking for something mid-ranged for a 26" wheel that isn't going to break the bank- i.e. student budget. I know that Fox and Rockshock dare I say it are the main players, but what do I look for in their extensive lineups?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of riding do you do, social fun, singletrack some racing etc. Get the 2012 Reba, basically the same weight as last years SID. And excellent all round performance. Can get a 2011 reba for cheapish excellent shock as well just a tad heavier.

Fox is too expensive with too much maintennace and no real performance difference to the RS. (My opinoin anyway)

I mainly cross-crountry type stuff and some single track with a couple of races thrown in if that helps at all. Looking for an all-round performer I suppose, but that doesn't help much I suppose. Thanks covie.

Then the reba is the perfect shock, you could get away with a recon gold, but the reba so much more of plush :) Cheapest option is the 2011 Reba RL or RLT. basically the exact same shock the one you just have to adjust with a tool, the other you get a knob but its no biggy you dont play with that particular setting much.

Yup, if you're on a budget, steer away from Fox. I agree with Covie, not much diff in performance to the RS stuff. And ja, go for the Reba which is a better all rounder than the SID.

Sounds like you want a 100mm fork. Unfortunately all the Fox forks are pretty expensive. The cheapest ok fork is a RockShox Tora but they are a bit heavy. If weight is a problem try and go for a Rockshox Recon Solo Air they are great value for money. You should be able to buy one second hand from someone for a very good price.
