How to ruin your budget in two easy steps - a 29er story

Once upon a time, actually last weekend, at a place far far away, actually at the Bryanston bike park - my mate and I were riding our bikes.

He just bought a Scott Spark Elite full-sus 29er, and I was on my rigid SS.

We headed under the highway and into ZOMBIE BIRDHOUSE (add evil laugh here)

We took the wimp route to the left into the "bowl", where there is the smaller of the 2 gap-jumps. I went first and watched my mate negotiate this minor obstacle. You can probably guess where this is going, right?

Yup, he didn't have enough speed and his rear wheel hit the far lip of the gap, which just happens to be a concrete slab. His rear suspension rebounds viciously and he goes over the bars to the sound of all the air escaping from his back tube - the one in his rear tyre

On inspection, 5mm cut in tyre and obviously a wrecked inner tube. And a huge dent in his rim on the one side. Anyways, we manage to get the tube swapped and the tyre manages to seat - we true the wheel as best as we could by re-tensioning the now super-loose spokes. Bike's rideable at least.

Next, we cross back to the main side of the park and I say "Lets do some loops inside the Canyon section".

As we cruise through at a sedate pace, hisbar end clips a tree, turning his front wheel 90-degrees. His 100kg momentum is in the forward direction. His wheel folds over like a flour tortilla in a mexican restaurant....DOH! :excl:

So...anyone know of a nice strong 29'er wheelset going for a good price?

I'm assuming this is not your friend trying to sell the wheels...?

"1 month old, front wheel has a slight wobble"

Nah not the same guy, & its my front wheel only & i just rubbed the edge of the single track?!?!

Funny though they also come off a Spark 29er

suppose the wheels are a bit soft if you weigh 90+

I fitted a set of Easton EA70 xct's on friday, will see how they hold out

Oh & shot for the free bump on the ad :whistling:
