What has your bike cost you in terms of Rands per km.

in perspective - just after my 45k service my car's cost per km is R6.73 - thats with a service plan but including all petrol costs (does exclude interest paid to the bank though!)

I also reckon average road cyclists push far more km than the average mountain bikers so perhaps a cost per hour would be more accurate an assessment. And would also account for those who ride slower

 

My mountain bike: R458/hr

My cheap steel road bike: R33/hr

My carbon road bike: R144/hr

Most of the above were fun

 

My car: R90/hr - none of them particularly fun

To all those that compare to their cars, just remember that you have to compare apples with apples, so if you use total cost of your bike including purchase price, then do the same, including interest for you car.

To this I will add R30/hr in petrol. I have now spent 1/3rd of the original purchase price of my car on petrol.
