Looks like SLX with Elixir 1 brakes.

I would buy an almost new/second hand/demo or 2011 for the same money with better specs myself.

With 29ers being all the rage. Bargains abound for us 26" riders.

I bought a brand new carbon 26er with XT/SLX and Fulcrum Red Metals 3's and tubeless tires for R16k. It is a hardtail though.

Here's my 2c.

It is a nice bike and it will do just fine for some people.

Personally I would try and stretch to the 29 Elite because I don't like the spec of the team. The 29 Elite was on my short list when I bought in January, it was only squeezed out because I could get the full XT kit and 120mm travel on the Ghost and that was a big deal for me.

I love the geometry of the Scott... How much do they want for an Elite?

Have you tried negotiating at Cajees?

You can get the Spark 29er Elite for around R19k - call and haggle all the Cajees...

If you want great service and a nice LBS to buy it from at maybe a couple rands more then goto Cycle Tech in Kyalami and speak to greg or marco.

The elite 29er is best value for money, no question - it's mostly full XT with a couple SLX and Avid 7s for brakes....

Better to spend the 3 or 4k more now and save yourself the heartache of wanting a "29er" later....

thanks V I will give them a call, here is another hopefully better format on the spec comp (is this really worth the additional just short of R4K)

did not work......but basically the question is, is this "better" equipment worth the additional ZAR's, which I suppose you already answered....but why...does it respond better...durable...etc

Scotty, what is the issue with the rims...I weight in at 102kg & I am already concerned about the larger diameter flex (as told by another bike shop who does not reccomend 29ers due to this issue, especially when taking tight corners at speed, he has gone back to 26)

jeez nothing is simple anymore, my scorpion BMX I had as a kid went through anything haha

Wipeout, that oke doesn't know what he's talking about. The tension would be provided by the spokes, and as long as the wheel was built properly, there shouldn't be an issue with strength vs a 26" wheel, especially with the tech improvements.

The guy himself is probably a muppet on the bike, and didn't try to get used to the different geo / wheelbase of the 9er, and therefore wrote it off because it didn't behave the way he wanted it to behave....

Alex rims are just soft though. I'm 105kg myself, and my Alex rims were not that great ito quality and strength. They warped & buckled easily, but were also most probaby badly built. They're also heavier than the average wheel, so that's another point against them. Nothing "worng" with them, but they're not in the same league as XT / Crossmax wheels...

EDIT: Built properly, a 29er wheel shouldn't be "weaker" than a 26er wheel. Especially since the majority of the strength comes from the spokes themselves, and how the wheels are built.

Alex wheels suck, i've had road and MTB and the wheels spent as much time in the shop as on my bike. The BS was spinning you BS, i have a 29 DS and while i find it slightly more clumsy on very technical routes it kicks &ss everywhere else .

I see you in Benoni, if i can suggest go to Finish Line in Glen Marais shopping center and speak to Clint or Arthur, they have a wide range of bikes including Merida and Silverback who both have comparable 29'ers.
