Joburg2C - What a ride, what a vibe, except ...

I finished what was one of the best events I have ever done. The riding was spectacular. The hospitality was out of this world at every stop, with the exception of Glengarry in the Kamberg. This little sign is what greeted specatators and supporters before they could get anywhere near the finish line or cyclists. I was a little bit irritated by what smacked of opportunism and expoloitation of supporters and specators, but maybe I am the one who has the problem...

Hi Brad,

I was there and that sign was only relevant to the race village where there was food, coffee, cooldrinks, wifi etc. all for free. It was not applicable to the finish line where supporters could definitely gather for free. Personally I think it is fair enough - I saw too many riders going up to the food stations multiple times at other stopovers to get plates of food for family and/or supporters without paying extra. That just makes it more expensive in the long run for us riders.

ALMOST everything was absolutely fantastic, the only stopover I thought was really *** was at the end of day 6.

To me everything about that stopover was a mission from cold showers to missioning to get food for both dinner and breakfast and then not being able to get cold drinks, and not forgetting having to go and fetch our own mattresses for the tent

Overall I thought everything was perfectly organised except for the end of day 6

Hey BradB, we were one of the providers through the race. We also had a Sign printed stating that if you had a Band it was Free, if you didn't it was 10 rand. The money we made from selling coffee went straight to my guys as 'Tips'.

The concept is not to make money, but rather provide for the RIDERS and support. We obviously budget for a certain amount of product. We need to carry stock for the full 9 days, if there is NO control on spectator consumption, it tends to get out of hand.

Last year in Frankfort (great village / great people) we had a scenario, where because it was FREE, we had kids getting product for their Aunts, Sisters, Cousins etc. This just created a longer queue for the guys that really matter on that Ride. The Riders.

PS a supporters package is included for the event at R2,500 for the full duration.

Hope this clears it all up or at least gives ones persons inside, from a providers point of view.

Cheers

No Go Rouxtjie, 1200 Riders will be two much to handle at the moment. I'd need 3 Trailers to handle the volume.

At joBerg2C we were handing out 3 coffees a minute between 04h30 and 06h30 in the morning!

Have a great ride, the single track was amazing!

The sign was at the top gate as well, before the entrance to the finish/bike wash. Surely they dont have a huge surge of spectators @ GlenGarry, it is quite out the way.

R100 for lunch an supper seems fair.

Sure enough. It seems fair. Although, if u read the small print, it says whether you eat or not. That's where the problem comes in for me. A man and his wife came to watch their child sing, they were not allowed in. What about those who had already eaten at the tea room above the race village. It's sometimes not what you say, but how you say it. The attitude and connotations of that fine print were a little unpleasant. I would usually not have a problem paying R100 for 2 meals.

Out of all the stops we had along the whole route, that was the only place with an attitude towards supporters and spectators. Although, I have to agree with Domestique, it was by far the lowest scoring stop of the event. Besides the bad attitude the food was not on par with the other stops. Anyhow, the rest of the event was probably the best riding and support money can buy, worth every penny. And as for the coffee, wow, it is without a doubt the best coffee on this planet.

I don't think Domestique is agreeing with you. You say Day 5 stop (Glengarry) was *** and he is talking about the farm we stayed on Day 6.

Ps: The coffee was fantastic 101SCC. Well done!

Thanks BradB and Big JD, Wappo, Gary and Glen are great guys.

Always a pleasure to support their rides.

BradB, think you summed it up. It's not the bucks but the way it is written.

The guys in the Free State are super hospitable, Once again Sterkfontein gets my vote.
