I need help please :)

Please can you recommend what i should put into my bottle and camelbak while im cycling in a race?

I dont like eating breakfast early in the morning so before a race i have had hardly anything substancial to eat...

I feel that towards the end of the race that mybody is drained andi have no more fuel to keep up my pace :-(

Please can anyone suggest what specific race fuel/suppliment i can use to keep my energy levels up throughout the race?

I have tried to eat energy bars during the races but feel too ill to eat them...

Any advice would be great

Thnx

I eat oats (just add water kind) before the I ride. After 80km I found that my legs give in but I am tired. I take a sip of my energy drink (Whasp) every 10 min to ensure I don't dehydrate.

Training rides I eat Jungle oats bars but in races I use powerbar energy.

Try eating something before a race your body needs it

Know what you mean - some mornings I force feed myself!! Else I just wouldn't make it!

As for endurance drink - 32gi works really well.. They have those bite size sweeti things too that are pretty awesome

Eat before the race and drink during the race

Most races are a bit of travel away for me, so I generally I eat some cereal(Instant Oats or Future Life + coffee when I wake) very early. Closer to the start (1hour) I have something like a PowerBar Performance bar.

I use 32gi Accelerate during the race but I top up with 2 or 3 PowerBar gels. This regime keeps me fuelled and does not spike me during the race. So much so that friends have tried the same PowerBar regime with similair great success. The gels tend not to happen during the MTB events, as I generally take them a bit easier than the road events.

32gi endurance has not positive effect on my energy levels, and my current impression is that current race feeding scheme success is more because of the PowerBars than the 32Gi, although I've not tried to eliminate one or the other for comparative reasons

My routine FWIW -

  • Make 2x sarnies night before: 1 peanut butter; 1 nutella.
  • Eat at least one in car on way to event - usually both, but if I have any left they go in cool bag for after ride
  • A snack about 30 mins+ before start - generally an oats bar of some kind or banana, sometimes go with a caffeinated Gel if I need a kick start
  • bottle 1 - Hammer Perpetuem, mix depending on event - generally a 3 or 4 hour mix, less for short events
  • bottle 2 - plain water
  • jersey pockets - usually carry an oats bar or two, maybe a gel in case I'm struggling. Most often I finish with these untouched.
  • post ride - eat something within an hour

Not perfect - but best model I've found so far. On long/hot events I feel Perpetuem doesn't replenish enough electrolytes and have been pondering carrying some electrolyte-only tabs that I can put in plain bottle. Cool winter rides though, I don't have seem to have any issues
