I recently dumped my big ring in favour of a bash guard and am thinking more and more each day of dumping the granny gear too and just running the 32T (34T later when I'm fitter)... obviously I'll need a chain guide - but what? There seem to be so many brands and types on the market, I am confused...

Anything I should be looking at - reliable, something that either comes with a bash guard or can accommodate one, and a decent price? Advice?

This is for my trail / AM rig, not DH. But this is the best board for this sort of advice ;)

Ok, so this is a copy and paste of a reply I made on another thread...

but here's what I run on my AM rig

I'm running 28T & 36T blackspire chainrings. A straitline alu bashguard and a BB mount blackspire stinger.

When in the 36T the chain runs in the groove of the stinger's roller. When dropping to the small ring, there stinger is designed to run the chain on the "ramped up part", thus keeping the tension.

If you're going for a single ring up front I would rather go for something with a taco, as opposed to a bash guard. The e*thirteen LG1+ is a winner, as is the MRP G2 (what I run on my DH rig). They don't come cheap though. You'll be looking at around R1200.

The blackspire straightline setup shown above will be about R600

Is a system as described in the options above not make a noise due to the friction in the system. Just asking out of curiosity.

If your worried about noise get the straightline silent guide

My one bike with one gear is my silent night stalker bike, the Shova (Even with new chain and cassette fitted) is my not so silent ride.

Do these guides really make a huge difference and does one not "feel" it when pedaling. Again asking out of curiosity as I have never ridden a bike with one fitted yet.

Yup, chian guides make quite a big difference. Especially when jumping, or hitting excessively rocky/bumpy trails. Dropping a chain is not fun... only thing worse in my books is punctures.

As for the noise... it's slight and you get used to it. Also, one doesn't really feel the friction... or maybe that's just me... I'm used to it. all my bikes run chain guides

Wes, that system is the one I prefer to the bashguard roller types. The only issue I would have with that DMR is the lack of taco. It leaves your chainring quite vulnerable.

Yeah, that mini G2 is a good option.

Does your bike have ISCG tabs?

Just be aware that if you have to BB mount with an adapter, sometimes the baseplate of the chainguide can foul with the lugs on your cranks (where your granny gear went).

I personally haven't had this, but I do know it happens

No, I don't have ISCG tabs. Maybe it's time to buy that Cotic BFe ....

As nice as the BFe is (and I'll admit that it would be my do-it-all hardtail of choice)... don't abandon your Meta because of some silly little tabs

Just go adapter on it's a$$!

The c sixx guides are cool. They are blingy a ****. The quality is second to none. Weigh nothing (Carbon) and they come with a bb adapter as you don't have ISCG tabs. The downside is they aren't the most quiet. I think the new ones are coming with built in velcro bits for noise reduction tho. Oh and you'll be helping a local company out. Oh. And they aren't the cheapest.

I was joking. But damn, I am soooo tempted to get a BFe. And no, not for the ISCG tabs :P

A mate is trying to convince me to stick to 2 rings, which I may do in the interim, given that chain guides aren't cheap. He suggests running a tensioner in the meantime, so what about this on my current 2 ring setup:

Do it!

that's similar to the Blackspire Stinger I run on my bike. It does the job pretty darn well!
