Grebel Posted June 14, 2012 Share So there are a few guys in KZN that have started to dable in a bit of DH using our trail bikes (Which I am sure we all hope to upgrade to full DH rigs as and when the funds are available). Those of you that ride DH are well aware that a XC lid and cycling jersey just aren't going to cut it should you need to take a soil sample at some point... Bearing in mind that not all of us can afford to ride in the latest TLD kit, I would like to know where you get your clothing, protective gear and helmets at a reasonable price? What are you wearing? I understand the concept that you get what you pay for, but unfortunately I am on a budget here. (Champaigne taste on a beer budget...) What shops specifically in the Durban area (MX or DH specific) would be a good starting point? Your average LBS doesn't really cater for the DH scene and those that do usually stock the expensive boutique stuff. I need a shirt, full face helmet and body armour which I hope to aquire with R2k. Think it's possible?

Howzit Grebel, I am not sure of a specific shop in Durban but I can point to you in the direction of an online supplier that is dedicated to gravity riders who cater for your All Mountain/Trail, Downhill and Dirt Jump/Street riders. Great bunch of guys and I am sure that you will find what you are looking for. http://dialdbikes.co.za/ Good luck Edited June 14, 2012 by gwhite RossW
patches Posted June 14, 2012 Share Firstly... Diald Bikes has 661 Comp helmets for a good price (when they get stock again).. But here's what I roll in. Helmet: 661 Evo Legend (was R730 on CRC excl. VAT)http://www.sixsixone.com/media/store/product/EVO_LEGEND.jpgKnees: (either TLD T-Bones or TLD Lopes, found them for R200 and R220 respectively on buycycle. Usual price is aproxx R600 and R1000 on CRC excl. VAT)http://images.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/OG/2009_Troy_Lee_Designs_T-Bone_Guards_Black.jpg?01AD=3-xiaSbihTHDgQjT_WSiPAeNI00ESr0fMp9PfKthukR5C1Ix008ofjA&01RI=61AAB669E052556&01NA= http://www.mxsouth.com/troyleedesigns/troy-lee-designs-knee-shin-guards-lopes-signature-knee-guards_1.jpg Upper Body: Thor Impact Rig SE (got a free new one with my 1st DH bike. Approx R1800 from most MX shops. I don't always wear it though) http://www.mxsouth.com/thor/thor-motocross-chest-protectors-impact-rig-se-protectors-2009_1.jpg Neck: Leatt DBX Ride (the entry level one. R2300 from my local MX shop) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Ija-snxkL.jpg Jerseys: Usually just the cheapest Thor etc. ones at the local MX shop. If you buy the design from a season or 2 ago, they usually half the price.

Lets just say that I am built for gravity oriented sports and not for climbing... I borrowed a set of Race face knee and shin pads from Kelvin Purchase the other day and they are something that I would have bought online. Problem was that they didn't fit around my tree trunks. Gauging size is the problem and having to swap them if they are too small.

wesley_r Posted June 14, 2012 Share I can also vouch for Diald Bikes - they've got some nice stuff and are happy to answer any questions you might have. Also - for things like 661 knee guards, and with helmet, there are size charts and measurements that can help you figure out your sizing Brett

Grebel Posted June 14, 2012 Share Grebel... if you know how the Race Face stuff fits... here's a good local online option for bargain gear http://www.cyclesafr...protection.html That's the problem. The pads I tried on didn't fit. Looking at them though I would have bought them if I saw them online.

Super_mil Posted June 14, 2012 Share Check out i-MAS. They are a motorbike store in KZN (122 Old Main Road, Botha's Hill). They do MX kits (shirts & pants for under R1k, they unfortunately don't do MX/DH shorts). They also have various protective kit on sale. I have found there prices to be very good when compared to other local retailers.http://www.motorbikeparts.co.za/ The Race Face stuff from CyclesAfrica is a great deal at the moment. Just size quite small on the knee/shin guards (eldows are fine). I got Mediums & probably would have been more suited to smalls. The sizing chart is pretty good though. The Digs are an awesome deal, but they have no Mediums left.
