I have to agree, KZN races are your best bet for something more technical.

'Looks like it.

Pity that Gauteng events are generally so boring. It's not like we don't have any rocks, hills or mountains here, it just seems that most event organisers avoid 'em.

Come play at any Van Gaalens marathon events, you will humbly eat your words.

See, this is the impression that I didn't want to create.

It's not that I think I'm too hard core for the other events or that I'm downplaying the challenge that a longer distance, flatter event poses. It's just that I don't like that sort of riding. Heck I don't even think I'm a good technical rider, but I do like trying.

Given a choice between a marathon and going to the veld/illegal dumping site a few block from my house and wrestling my bike through ditches and over brick heaps, broken washing machines and disposed bodies, I simply prefer the latter even though the marathon may be more challenging physically.

Only 3 good technical events come to mind:

- van gaalens (any event hosted there)

- redstone crazy croc (almost died but loved it)

- groot marico (there is some gravel travel, but is good either way.

Speak for yourself!

...as for me...

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Just kidding! but yeah, I get what you're saying. And enough with the technical (when there is some) being on climbs! Sure it's a challenge... but if you wanna do the race-ist thing and win... run your bike up the climb (past the people trying to prove something in their granny gear)

Technical descents however... running isn't the faster option on those

There is always Hil2Hill coming up and then there is the Trailblazer at the end of the year at Karkloof

Thanks, I'll check these out.

Which part of Tokai is techinical, I must have missed it all.

I think you did... There is plenty of pretty technical riding there, you just need to know where to look. Parts of Boulders are technical training heaven, for example. Same for DH1 and DH2. Nothing unrideable, but plenty difficult enough to hone skills on.

How would you guys rate Vori-Berg in terms of the technical that you are looking for.

With some input from all we can possibly expand on the existing sections or add some new loops.

It would be nice if a couple of you would want to join up with us to show us what you want.

In my OP I mentioned angry alligator, but it's actually the crazy croc that I was thinking of.

Speaking only for myself, I like variety. Plain and simple.

Long gruelling ascents

Short Steep rocky ascents

Rock gardens

River crossings

Wet roots

Mud

Gravel

Sand

Technical descents

Technical descents with twists in 'em

Fast sweeping corners

Fast corners with berms

Fast off-camber corners

Tight switchbacks

Drop offs

Roll offs with nasty grooves

Logs to bunny hop

A tabletop jump or two

And some broken washing machines :)

..Huey gunships flying overhead to set the mood will be nice too.

Seriously though, bar the last two items (I got carried away), gimme 30 kilometres of non-stop interesting challenges and I'll be in MTB heaven.

A comprehensive reply,

Have you been to Vori-Berg ? if not come and ride the next race in August,

Cheers

Lion Man marathon is another great event with some nice technical climbs and descents. Sabie, Baberton MTN events as well, up there with the best.

The Nissan Trail Seeker events are more for the less outgoing mtb riders to put it mildly (with the exception of VG) so you have to go further afield but certainly do-able from GP.

I haven't been there, no. If you've got most of my list covered, then I'll certainly be there.
