Road Tyre Choice

I have been starting to shop around for new road tyres and was looking in the range of R250 - R380 per tyre.

Important considerations

I am a recreational cyclist, but still want to ride as fast as I can, with my gear aiding me as much as possible, without breaking the bank. For the time being I have only one set of wheels and they have to serve as training and racing wheels. I would like to get 3000-4000km out of a set of wheels.

Tyres I have been looking at:

  • Vittoria Rubino @ R280 per tyre (Using this tyre currently as it came with the bike)
  • Continental Gatorsking @ R350 per tyre
  • Continental GP4000 @ R380 per tyre

If I can really motivate the more expensive tyres and find that they are still value for money, then I would consider them. What are your recommendations?

I use Schwalbe Ultremo DD and Mavic tyres for racing.

Just tried the Rubino for the 1st time for training. I laaik it!

Why not look at Conti Grand Prix as well.

I am using them and very satisfied with them.
