Lights: Single setup placement, helmet or handlebars?

Recommended Posts

So last week I took my new Extreme light out for a spin and really happy to have bought something strong than 1 candlelight (unlike my Blackburn).

I plan to buy a second (stronger) light but for now where is the best placement when running a single light?

I will be using this on tar at night in the suburbs after 8pm and the roads are generally quiet and poorley lite.

helmet without a doubt. Try the options, but I'm convinced you'll go for the helmet!

helmet = light always where you look. handlebars... light shows where ever your handlebars turn, not where you are going!

Thanks

2nd question, where to place the battery? It does not weigh much and I walked around with it tucked under the headstrap one night and did not notice it. Is it norma to mount it on the helmet, or should I look like a coal miner and mount it to my baggies belt (I'm a MTBer so ride with baggies)

Mine is either in my Camelbak, or when I'm without that it goes into the shirt pockets (although the magicshine battery is a bit bulky for that). I thread the wire through the helmet vents so it goes out the back of my helmet directly onto my back, otherwise I've found that it flops around a bit too easily

For the suburbs mount it on the bars and attach the battery to the bars under the stem. There is enough light to see around you. for offroad put it on your head with the battery pack in your shirt pocket or on your belt.

Agree, mount it on the handlebars. I have mounted my battery under my saddle and wrap the cable around the toptube and fasten it with cable ties on the rear brake cablehousing

Yip. Mount it on bars. That beam is wide enough to see around corners when mounted on the bars. Remember to angle it down so that you don't blind motorists.

The battery can velcro to wherever you have a convenient spot. I find the angle between the top and downtube works for me.

I found the opposite to be better. Reason? Simply because the headlamp always points to where you are looking, and thus going.

With the handlebar mounted light being brighter, and the cheapo headlamp being less bright you are ALWAYS looking from a brightly lit area into a dimly lit area causing instant night blindness. Rather mount the bright light on your head, and the secondary, less bright one on the handlebars so that the (weaving about) handlebar light is there so you can be seen, and lighting up your peripherary(sp?) vision areas.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to try it on my helmet next time and see the difference. Without a doubt I release I need a second light - one on the head and another on the bars

  • 2 months later...

That is how i ride. Helmet 1000 lumen and 2000 lumen handle. I find that the helmet mount should be less brights or else i get tonal vision. I also prefer the helmet mounted light to be more focused. It then throws further . Also the fact that it requires less power makes it lighter. The more powerfull the handle bar light the wider it should be. anything under 70deg is not wide enough.

A wider beam requires a lot more light/power it is an d^2 ration. Some big name brand fool the clients by making the light very focused and thus it looks pretty bright.

Pyro2000 has a very good balance beam. It is about 90deg wide but it is designed so that it does not over Illuminati the area near you and changes over smoothly to a nice hot spot that can easily reach 65meter. What i like about the light is that it lux reading is about the same over the full field of view.

I ride with the Pyro1100 on my helmet. it has a nice wide flood but an very very small and focused hot spot. It is great to fill in the shadows from the lower mounted handle bare light. I find 1/2 is a good ration but 1/3 is a bt much. If the ration between your head light and handle bar light get to big your eyes will not be able to adjust and see much when looking out side of the throw of the handle bar light. It differs for people so you need to see what works for you.

That is why there is a combo special offer on pyrolights Pyro Combo The perfect pair I hope to encorage more people to ride like that. There is also the safty thing. If you ride and one light stops you aren't left in the dark....

Only draw back is that it will not give any benefit to mix 4000K with standard LEDs like yours. Therefore the Fluxient 3000 3xT6 is a good option. It is only 72deg wide but the 3000 lumen just lights up everything.

It is selling for a steel of only R1395. I can't seen that there is any other light on the market that really comes close to this light regarding value vs performance.
