While ago the free body stopped engaging. Stripped the free body, gave it a good clean. Noticed that the engaging "spring" was partial out of the groove (see sketch). Re-inserted the spring.

Cycle a couple of times without problems. Yesterday the free body start slipping again. When opening the free body, I noticed that the spring is again partially out of the groove. This seems to be the cause of the slipping of the free body. This time there is damage to the spring (bent).

Question is why does the spring not stay in position (groove)

i had a similar problem with my road freebody. my spring was broken back so i bent up the remainder of the spring and filed the edge sharp to ensure engagement of the cam plate. check yr cam plate. check the attachment if it helps.

The spring is beyond repair. i have bought the wheels in 2008. Been cycling a lot without problems. Do you say that it is the cam plate that causes the spring to go out of position?

The spring is meant to stick out like that.

the attached image is how it is supposed to be. The spring on my hub was more than 80% out of the groove and severally bent. Will post photo tonight

the spring is meant to be out, check if the cam plate is working. the spring engages the cam plate . if your sring id blunt in front it could cause problems too or your cam plate is stuffed.

Could you clarify what you mean by out.

- the last say 5 - 10 mm (as in the image) or

- up to 90% of the full lenght

i stand to be corrected, but i dont think theres much wrong with the spring out that far. when the body gets attached to the wheel then it would be commpressed into the mould. check if the point is sharp enough to engange the cam plate. the spring shoudnt slip over the cam plate protrusions. that's what causes the slippage (i think). i sharpend my spring tip/ end and then it was sorted. the point was round when the spring broke before.
