I dont know how you feel, but can it really take so long to fix the damn highways / N12 specifically.

The buggers close off lanes for days on end but nothing is done in those lanes.

when you do see the guys there 1 works and 5 watch him.

The dude waving the red flag irritates me.

No temporary lines showing lanes, besides irritating it's downright dangerous.

Agree fully with this

The N12 between Kraft Road and Putfontein on the East Rand has to be one of the most dangerous roads in the country.

The N12 highway connecting the East Rand to Johannesburg is unfinished and particularly hazardous, writes John Paterson by e-mail.

There are often not enough signs to warn drivers of frequent changes in the width of lane and in change of lane direction.

The road surfaces are uneven and stepped in many places, and this is a deathtrap for all, especially motorcyclists.

The new detour over Atlas Road causes backups kilometres long.

A competent contractor understanding the chaos that such a detour causes should be working extended hours (including weekends) to alleviate the situation as quickly as possible.

Often they do not even appear to be working on this detour during the week.

Who is responsible to ensure that the safety standards are maintained by the contractor, Sanral or the Department of Public Works?

Whoever is responsible is not doing their duty.

Johannesburg - The Gauteng roads department will need about four to six months to repair a sinkhole on the N14 Ben Schoeman highway, it said on Thursday.

"Considering the extent of the work, technical complexity of the project and traffic and safety considerations... a period of between four and six months will be required for completion," said spokesperson Octavia Mamabolo.

A leak in a water pipe crossing the N14 Ben Schoeman freeway, in Centurion, caused a sinkhole between the north and south-bound carriageways.

Two of the south-bound lanes and one of the north-bound lanes had to be closed for safety reasons.

Mamabolo said two lanes would be added to the outer shoulders of the slow lanes to alleviate traffic congestion.

"The construction of the temporary additional lanes to bypass the sinkhole on the southbound carriageway will be completed before the end of July," she said.

She said the construction of an additional lane on the north-bound carriageway would take longer, as it would include the widening of the Jean Avenue off-ramp.

"The department would like to thank motorists for their patience in the last two weeks and requests motorists to be patient and adhere to the speed limit in the designated area," said Mamabolo

Just to play devils advocate. Usually there are signs posted, the problem is that the drivers are going too fast and/or not paying attention. And if the area is known to be under construction then the road users should be more vigilant while using that stretch of road.

Its not only the highways, just about every secondary road now has 'roadworks' that are going nowhere fast.

National pandemic. Heads should roll but they wont.
