I said I would come and ride KK again as it has been awhile. I introduced SIR M to Melville Koppies this weekend. I think he likes it.

I did indeed. Very good fun. Not a hard climb at all and the downhill is mega fun.

@joecocks, I see Modders is hosting a night ride for charity on the 8th. Mass Hubbers gathering? Just saying...

Yeah I saw that bud. I think guys are keen on Thaba though... that seems to be the general interest at the moment. And I would think after last time, Modders needs a bit of rain before I go back there :)

Let me know when you guys hit it again... would love to try it

Will do. We did have a bit of a run in with a local there though who didn't like us riding the 'paths'.

Not saying you guys did anything wrong but the whole MK west area requires sensitivity from all parties. I'm involved in the conservation of the Melville Koppies and there are always ongoing discussions and negotiations taking place with conservation groups, walkers/hikers, African church groups, the Police, security companies, JHB City Council etc etc.

Cyclists have been off MK West for some time now so I think if people start riding it again and don't recognise that they are very much a third priority as far as the management of MK are concerned, we (cyclists) risk getting into some confrontations and possibly a repeat of the muggings and assaults that took place there a few years ago which will be in no one's interest.

My 2c - I'll probably stick to hiking not riding the Koppies.

Edit to add that cyclists aren't allowed on the Melville Koppies so don't be surprised if you're confronted by someone.

I won't go into it here but I will say that our club has been at the forefront of these discussions with all relevant parties. The hiking paths which go straight up and down are what's causing the erosion - which is why they have to keep on creating water bars with rocks etc.We have offered to build proper sustainable trails at our own cost but have been continuously met with a brick wall.

Did you know that there is now no fence on the Alberts side of the Koppies...

Was it on that short downhill piece of sand road with those 4 small jumps. If so you really pick up speed there and a fall can be eina.

Snap! I looked down at one point and was doing 34kmph. got to confident on the first three and gave number four my all! The front wheel slipped out from under me on landing and I woke up 20-25m from the jump hahaha. Looking at how far I slid in the loose rock and sand I got off lightly with a few scrapes and bruises. My helmet however did not live to tell the tale.

@Joe_Cocks, did you see these posts?

Yesterday when we arrived at Thaba, we were informed that the route has reversed.

The printed form explained that the green route is being ridden in reverse, and that most of the blue sections stayed the same.

Heading out on te trail, we took the first blue arrow to the right, all went well, rode the sections, and met up with the green trail eventually again. did this a couple of times, and after we rode the "Dave" section i think the confusion stepped in.

I was not sure if we were supposed to turn left, and go down into the "valley" where the new berms have been made, or turn right back up the hill and do the blue sections by the powerlines. We turned right back up the hill and did the powerline sections, thereafter we ended up doing some of the sections we did first...wanting to really go down the rocks on the other hill but ended up frustrated on the same trail we already did.

On the thrail, we met some really confused peeps, not knowing which way to go. Part of the problem I think is that some of the arrows may have blown in the wrong direction by the wind. Coming down some of these sections with people trying to negotiate upwards is not good.

I really really really enjoyed riding DOWN the big rocks after the hotel, and going UP along the fence at the hotel.

Not sure what Wendell's thinking was, but the concensus is (with everyone that we met on the trail) is that we liked it the other way around.

Thank you for the effort you put in, in making this one of the best riding venues in SA.

Hi Rocknrolla, I am sorry to see you a bit upset as well as not enjoying the trails.....unfortunately I have had some personal problems and haven't got to completing the new route markings.

I have ridden the " new direction GREEN" with a number of riders of all levels of ability. I rode these test runs quite a few times and didn't just do it on a whim. As you know I am a passionate rider and will not make changes just for changes sake.I had a good thumbs up from every test rider. The green trail is 15km and forms the BASE trail. The blue sections turn off and returns to the green trail which is now ridden ANTI CLOCKWISE. So when you have returned to the green off a blue trail generally you need to turn right and again follow the green arrow signs.

Just focus on GREEN. What happens is that approximately the first half of the 15km trail the "green" is the ARROW. The second half the "green" is the BACKGROUND. Therefore you are heading home when the "colour" is the back ground..remember the green green grass of home. I assure you that I will get the whole routing done asap. Two new sections are almost complete and ready to ride..KUDU and AMON...looking forward to launching these. Please be patient I want you all to enjoy your experience.

I didn't. Confirms my suspicions... pretty sucky if you ask me. I liked it the other way around. Maybe we can move forward and go to fountains / groenies instead and VG the next weekend?

I'm always down for groenies&fountains, I need to go find my name on those small jumps that put me to sleep. Haha

I am seriously considering doing the night ride at modders with mates that night just for fun and then doing a 40km event on the Sunday.

Sounds to be a good weekend, three rides and then 5days of chilling before hill2hill.

You mean go back there and reclaim your dignity? :w00t:

Ja, I am undecided. Could be fun. Although modders really needs some rain!

40km trailseeker this weekend!

I believe a few of us are having a cold beverage after the Trailseeker this Saturday?

How about we make this our second unofficial hub gathering thing?
