Cassette sizes

I currently have a 10spd XT cassette on my wheel, I want to set up a second wheel just to use on my trainer; can I use a Shimano HG62 cassette without any complications, or would the difference cause dodgy chain wear?

I'm sure it should't be a problem, the cheaper one will just be heavier.

 

Just a note though if one of the cassettes is worn badly it will cause the chain to stretch and wear down the other cassette when you swop wheels.

so basically as long as both are 10sp cassettes you'll be fine, from what I understand

if you are able too I would suggest two chains as well. one for each casette. Obviously if you swap wheel every day this may not be ideal.

Apparently the only Difference between the SLX (HG81) and the XT cassette is the Nickel Plating.........

For what its worth, I shift between an HG 81 (on original bike, now road wheels) and an XT cassette. No unusual wear and tear on any of the components so far.

a cassette cannot wear a chain out. a chain does not stretch, if a cassette is worn out, the chan will skip over the teeth. you can use almost any chain on any cassette, as long as the chain is the is the higher spec, eg 10sp chain on 9 sp cassette. your shifting will not be great, but it depends on how you ride on the trainer. I personally use one gear and change the resistance, this way i can use almost a single speed on the trainer. Using one older gear that can be worn out like hell. But in no cercumstances will a gear wear out a chain!

Um, the holes in each pin link on a chain elongate over time, hence a chain becomes longer, so does 'stretch'...
