bought a new silverback storm and didnt realize that it only had 20 gears until receiving it. I'm still a noob and not sure how the gear ratio will comapre to my prevoius 27 spd.

I have bug at the moment and not able to train.

Any info will be great.

No need to panic, the 2x10 gear ratios were well thought out before they were slapped on the bigger wheeled bikes.

You are not missing out, you have all the ratios you need.

Oh and to be technically correct, you had a 9 speed bike, you now have a 10 speed bike

Count the number of gears on the cassette at the back, that will give you either 8, 9 or 10 speed.

You lose ultra-granny gear , which for some , me included is a sad loss :(

But you now only have 2 gears on the front which is awesome

I would never go back to 3 gears on the front , I do at times long for my ultra-granny gear though.

I wish Sram/shimano would make a 24/37 front blade option man that would be heaven.

Id way rather lose a high speed gear than a low speed gear , I'd say thats true for most riders , dedicated racers will disagree but most of us rarely use the last 2 high speed cogs and if ever its not at much cadence anyway...

Why do you say you prefer 2 gears in front to 3?

If you have less options for gears, doesnt it make it harder to ride?

And thanks "the One" for your input

I managed to go out for a ride today( with a roll of tp just in case) and must say the bike handles like a dream and climbs like a monkey!

Is it possible to convert a bike from a 3 x 9 to a 2 x 9 or 2 x 10?

I was spec-ing 2x10 for the gf, she can't push the same ratio's as me or such long cranks but 170 is too short. So i went Aerozine which gives me a 172.5 with a 39/26 and an 11/36 cassette to give her the same ratio's she's riding now, keeping the granny in check that she wants. Agreed it's better to be able to ride uphill, there's very little times that you seriously outgeared where you could pedal. Pretty much paid what i would for any other crankset.

See they do a 36/22

Agreed, 2x(whatever) to me just runs better, less drops, less hassles, as previously stated, you've done away with overlap gears so i don't think the 3rd blade up front is really needed, you still get the top and bottom end ratios, you loose marginally.

DeltaAlphaMike, yes, new shifters, rd, cassette, crankset, chain. You can get away with the FD staying the same so basically replace the whole drive train.

2x9 is doable with your existing parts but the chainline is horrible2x10 you'll need a complete new drivetrain , derailleurs and shifters and the parts willl fit your bike Edited by Skylark

That is what I was thinking. Well I will probably be waiting before I think of changing my drive chain. I am currently on a scott aspect with a 3 x 9. Awesome bike but wanting to try something different, I may end up avoiding the granny gear all together though. I shall see. But when I do get another bike I certainly shall look at the 2 x 10 option for the drive chain.

The bike I am looking at is the Merida one-twenty. I have heard it is also an awesome bike but this time I am going for a large frame. Medium is JUST too small =(

With only 2 blades the chainline is perfect - you can use all the cogs on the back with either of the 2 front blades without any issues.

You lose about 1 gear ratio tho - I wish that ratio was lost on the high speed gear not the low speed gear...

What you can do is get a 10 speed 2 blade crank and use that with the rest of your 9 speed bits , 9 speed chains work on 10 speed blades - then your chainline will be hundreds
