Hi,

The Argus is not about the race, it is about the vibe in Cape Town and the time away from home with a bunch of friends for a week end. Worth every cent.

The problem is that I do like it. But R330 is a lot of money on a student budget for a one day event that is over in 3.25 hours. Plus those loads of water points? Not used by me. The benefits i make use of are the full road closure and (hopefully not) safety bales.

Students drink out R300 a night...wait until you need to start budget for RA's, Medical Aid, Rent, Fuel, etc....then you will see us working people don't have it so easy... It is R330 for a oneday event, yes...I have never used the Argus water points either, but the vibe is awesome! Doing the race in Sub3 or sub7....you still had full road closure, one day you are allowed to take over the whole road....

I budget for my races for future, meaning I put away cash during the year for that, eg: League is R990, thats a once off amount + K2C, + Argus + Die Burger....and all the spares, etc...cycling is an expensive sport....but an awesome lifestyle.

Which students are those? Cause I certainly dont. And whilst I may not have all the expenses to deal with as a working person, I certainly wasn't born with a silver spoon in hand (C.C.R see what I did there). My point is, is that is it expensive. And being someone who has to work a job over and above a medical degree, I'd appreciate not having to pay through my ring (comparatively) for a cycle race that I truly do enjoy (2013 will be my 8th).

I love the road closure, I love the vibe, I love the people and the gees of your fellow cyclists, but you cant argue that R330 for a cycle event is a tad steep. You're definitely onto something with budgeting for races. It just accumulates you know, and you're totally right about it being an expensive sport. Parts, maintenance, race entry, petrol, training costs, it all adds up. And on a student budget that gets well tight, especially if I'm supposed to be drinking away R300 in a night.

You may have to take me to the hospital if I do though. World record BAC.

I am of the opinion....

That the road is there every day of the year. So if you are really that cheap. Why dont you just go and cycle the route on your own.

And if you want water stations and the roads to be closed pay the 300+ your bike is definatly more than that.

This brings me to the astronomical fees of mtb stage races 14k... Now that is reason for complaining.

Supply and demand... They will keep increasing the entry until they find the point where they battle to fill the race and then they will stick with it. If they can fill the entire race in a matter of days then they are clearly under-cutting themselves. Everyone moans about Cape Epic entries, but they could sell 100 early entries in less than a minute - clearly it's actually a bargain and worth it to more than enough people. I can't justify the cost of the Cape Epic so I guess that's my loss and I'm not their target market (yet...). No-one is forcing you to ride in any of the races, same as no-one forces people to pay R50k+ for the bikes they ride them on. You do it because you choose to...

I agree completely that it's expensive and I hate paying it, but it's a choice I make every year and I honestly don't know what price it would have to reach before I wouldn't be willing to pay to ride the Argus. Start triathlon's and then cycling will suddenly seem like a bargain!
