Tubeless conversion, rubber rim strip or tape required?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I bought a bike recently recently and stripped the wheels down to service.

Inside I found lots of old dried up sealant and a few large thorns poking through which i cleaned up.

There was yellow tape sealing the rims as well as a rubber strip (very old and tarnished) on top of that.

Should i be replacing the rubber rim strips, I cant work out if you need tape and a rim strip?

What is the reason for having both?

Thanks

Kevin

If it worked with just the tape, leave it like that....don't fiddle...lighter than strips and less expensive to convert.

Rims? Stans perhaps?

I've always been of the impression that the rubber strip is better for rims that are non UST and that tape only is ok for UST rims.

A combination of both.... maybe the guy who did the conversion found that both made it easier to seat the bead?

WHat kind of rims do you have?

Sorry, was reading like my behind, I thought it only had the tape. Like swiss says, if there are some strips in there it's probably because the guy that did it couldnt get the tyres to seat without them.

It they are stan's rims...just use yellow tape...should be fine

Alex TFS rims, maxis ust tubeless tires.

Going to swing by the bike shop now with the rim and tire and see if it is necessary to get rim strip again for seating purposes.

Thanks for the advice, I can go there knowing what questions to ask...

I've found that if the tire sits loose on the rim i.e if it you can get it on without using levers you're better off with the rubber. If the tire sits very tight you're better off with tape only.

I have rims that came with my bike when I bought it....pretty sure they arent UST rims. To convert I just have the tape and it works 100%.

Not sure if this really helps you but thats my 2c

Thanks guys!

I have bought all the parts now (Tape and Rubber rim strips) under the guidance from the shop that they were both neccessary.

I will let you know how the install goes.
