The Shimano are probably considered more entry level, but those Race Lites are not the strongest. I weigh 90kg and after being told by Just Fun, the Bontrager agents at the time, that there was no weight restriction, I bought a set a few years ago. After breaking multiple spokes on both brand new wheels, that were two months old, I insisted on a new set, which I sold and bought Ultegras. Someone recently here was also complaining about them. If I remember correctly they changed the spoke count a year or two ago, so they might be better now...

Hi All please tell me what you would choose and why, Shimano R500 wheels or Bontrager race lite wheels. Front wheels weigh exactly the same.

Thanks in advance - DM

Go for the Shimanos. Bulletproof. Avoid race lites at all costs. I got a set on a Trek 5000 a few years back. I weigh 95kg. Kept popping spokes. Gave them away to a mate, who ways 80kg. He had a cracked rim shortly after this.

Bontrager rims are rubbish in my experience, and they use aluminium nipples on their wheelsets.

Fail.

Stick with the Shimanos.
