I have the opportunity to get my hands on the 2013 Nukeproof AM Wheelset - only thing putting me off at the moment is the 27mm rim width. Only problem is, the DH wheelset is 29mm width, which I'd be happy with, but with a 150mm rear hub.

What do you guys think? Is 27mm pushing it? It's a Sun Ringle Inferno rim...

Pushing it in what way? too wide or too thin?

too narrow - I was pretty sold on the 2012 wheelset at 29mm wide... but 27mm? eish... I currently ride 31.7mm wide rims, love the grip but not the resistance, so I want to go narrower, but maybe not so narrow.

I have 2 sets of wheels that I use.

Mavic XM819's with a 24.5mm width (absolutely bombproof, had since 2008)

NS Bikes Fundamentals with a 33mm width (great set of wheels)

27mm should be fine. In fact a good set from what I have seen on the net.

A friend of mine just pointed out that I should look at the inner width:

The 2012 NP wheelset uses the Sun Ringlé MTX 29 rim - 29mm outer, 22.5mm inner, 570g

The 2013 NP AM wheelset uses the Sun Ringlé Inferno 27 - 27mm outer, 22.3mm inner, 480g

Inner width difference is 0.2mm - so the grip should be the same, but a much lighter wheel overall...

the_wes .... what are reader reviews like for that wheelset?

I ask this as I was chatting to a DH/AM rider last week and he showed me how his Nukeproof bars flex, just by pushing down on them ..... was flipping amazed that they would flex so much.

That internal rim width though should be good on a AM rig.

Should be fine! I have their Generator AM's based on the MTX 29's (which I'm guessing are now their DH wheel set). Those I use for jumping.

On the AM bike I have Mavic Crossmax SX (Mavic's Enduro/AM wheelset) which are 21mm wide (internal)... so external is probably 27mm or less.

Hairy, thanks - but those reviews are for the previous model, which uses the Sun Ringle MTX29 rim (and I've read them all ;). Their aren't any reviews out for the 2013 wheelsets yet, which come in 3 models - TR, AM and DH. TR is 25mm, AM 27mm and DH 29mm, all using the Sun Ringle Inferno rims. The DH only comes with a 150mm rear hub, so isn't an option.

2012 NP wheelset / Sun Ringlé MTX 29 rim - 29mm outer, 22.5mm inner, 570g

2013 NP AM wheelset / Sun Ringlé Inferno 27 - 27mm outer, 22.3mm inner, 480g
